Aspiring Speakers March Lightning Talks ยท Zoom ยท Luma

We're back with another set of lunchtime lightning talks. We have the following volunteers willing to try their hand at public speaking: Talks: Redouaneโ€ฆ

I developed a passion for public speaking over the past 6 years. Thus, I find it genuinely horrifying that we start to sound more and more like AI. Plus, who needs a human to regurgitate AI content?

AI is teaching us to speak like bots, and itโ€™s a problem

AI is creeping into our everyday conversations, making us less patient and teaching us to 'prompt' others instead of talking to them.

My next talk will contain 75 slides.
It must be my most slippery presentation to date.

Now that this is done: rehearse, rehearse, rehearse.

It was an honor to give the closing keynote at the George Washington University's OSCON.
Thanks to all the organizers and volunteers for putting together a great event. I attended many insightful talks about open source.

Are scientists funny? In a survey of more than 500 presentations at biology meetings, two-thirds of attempts at humor drew polite chuckles or none at all, and only 9 percent prompted enthusiastic laughter.  Almost 60% of talks included at least one attempt at humor. "That's higher than I would have thought. Good for the biologists," says Taylor Soderborg, a physician-scientist and scientific comms professional who was not involved in the study. Here's more from Nature, plus a link to the full study, published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B. Do you regularly give speeches and presentations? What's your approach to trying to add humor?
