How do you prove photography to a blind man?
A believer in psychic powers asks a skeptic this question. 10 seconds later the skeptic suggests:
"Everyone leaves the room but the blind man. He takes a picture of himself, and holds up a number of fingers (1 to 5) at random. The sighted person comes back into the room, looks at the picture and says “you were holding up X fingers”." Simple. Repeat with various different constraints and you'll have your proof. Now apply the same standards to psychic powers.

The Skeptic

Some of you will think I am crazy for saying this, and that's okay, it wouldn't be the first time someone has thought I was nuts. But I just want to throw this out there for those that are as discouraged as I am about the way things are going.

I am not a big believer in #astrology or #numerology or anything like that. I think many if not most #psychics are total frauds, engaging in "cold reading" just to make money off the gullible. If you tell me you are charging money for any kind of service that could remotely be classified as "woo woo" I'm outta here.

BUT - that does not mean I do not think that a very small percentage of people can have abilities that most of us don't. And unfortunately, algorithms can't tell the difference between the genuine, the frauds, and the fakes. So if you watch even one video on #YouTube about something you think just might be genuine, suddenly you may start getting recommendations for the subjects I mentioned in the above paragraph. And I started to notice kind of a trend, a lot of videos referenced March 2025, or specifically, March 21, 2025 as being some kind of turning point. Unfortunately most such videos turned out to have clickbait titles (the scourge of YouTube) or, if I attempted to watch one, did not immediately get to the point (and I don't have nearly enough patience to suffer those), so after about four or five tries I just gave up.

But I did glance at the descriptions and some of the comments, and apparently these people think something really big is going to happen starting about a week from now, and that it will ultimately (and I emphasize ultimately) be a change for the better, at least for most people. Now when I read something like that, my mind can't help going back to Y2K and to the end of the Mayan calendar in December of 2012, which were both big nothingburgers. Astrologers in particular have a long history of making predictions that don't come true (but when they get one right, they will tell you all about it and try to get you to forget all their other failed predictions). And to be fair, religion is just as bad, all kinds of wannabe prophets inhabit fundamentalist churches and give out false prophecies week after week (and just so you know, in old testament times if a "prophet" made even ONE prophecy that did not come true, he was considered a false prophet and to be ignored). Even Nostradamus wasn't right all that often (plus if you use vague enough language, you can claim success even if something slightly close to what you predicted occurs).

SO, I am not getting my hopes too high, in fact I am tired of having my hopes dashed into thousands of bits. And there are so many crooks and liars out there that even if I met someone who could genuinely see the future I probably wouldn't believe them. But I do think it is a little weird that so many are talking about March 21 (just search for that date in YouTube). I realize that is, or is right around the spring/autumn solstice (depending on which hemisphere you are in) but other than that I can't think of any good reason that day should be special. So I have the teeniest, tiniest bit of hope that MAYBE that will be the turning point where we start to come out of this darkness we are in. But I will not be at all surprised if once again nothing happens, or if things in the USA continue to fall off a cliff.

Perks to being Ciadish.co.uk ed: getting sneak previews of AMAZING books. Just read the outline for @swilua.bsky.social's #YA fiction debut. I am SO excited to read the book: #fairies + #fungi + #sceptics + #psychics. I'm thinking this is a title that will be VERY popular when it finds a #publisher.
