CHRYSALIS
Definition
1968 U.S. pressing
A little acid-ridden #psychedelic #progressive #artrock to get my morning going.
The band’s ONLY album; not overly intricate, but pretty melodic sounding and introspective.
I found this at a flea market in Seattle, Wa. when I took my son there for a concert. I grabbed it because I had never heard of them before and looked pretty interesting.
I didn’t realize it was kind of sought after.
“Lacewing” is the true gem here. Just a great tune. A beautiful little Beatles-esque #acidfolk number.
Odd thing about this band:
They don’t sound like they’re from NYC.
They sound a lot like the British bands of the time, and their singer James “Spider” Barborous actually slips in and out of an English accent occasionally.
Apparently there’s a promo MONO copy that sounds infinitely better, as this one’s a little thin on bass.
Great record, regardless.

ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE
Formed in 1995 by Makoto Kawabata at the same time as the Acid Mothers Temple Soul Collective, Acid Mothers Temple released their debut album in 1997 on PSF Records (Japan), and it was selected as one of the year's best albums in the The Wire magazine (UK). In 1998 the group played their first tours of the US and Europe. Since then the group has released a huge number of albums on labels from many different countries. As of 2017, the group has released around 80 albums. Every year since 1998, they have toured extensively in the US and Europe, and more recently have started performing around Asia and in Japan too. The group has performed in collaboration with many musicians including psychedelic originators Gong and Guru Guru, Simeon (Silver Apples), Nik Turner (Hawkwind), and the Occitanian trad singer Rosina de Peira. Japanese collaborators have included Afrirampo, Tatsuya Yoshida (Ruins), Maso Yamazaki (Masonna), Seiichi Yamamoto (Boredoms), Jun Kuriyama (The Ox), and many others.
MAGICK POTION
Hailing from the rural outskirts of Baltimore, consisting of founder, Dresden Boulden on Guitar and Vocals, Triston Grove on Bass, and Jason Kendall on Drums. Magick Potion is a hard hitting heavy rock trio channeling the raw energy and heavy grooves of the late 60’s and early 70’s. Clearly hooked on the likes of underrated groups such as Blue Cheer, The Amboy Dukes and Budgie, the band crafts a sound that fuse’s heavy rock’s gritty riffs with contrasting moments boarding on psychedelia. With roaring guitars, thunderous drums and hard driving bass lines Magick Potion conjures a vibe that is both nostalgic yet contemporary and original. Their music is a bridge to an era where rock was rebellious, loud and unfiltered, yet they infuse it with a spirit all their own.

GENESIS
Rock Roots
1981 Canada reissue
This is not a true “rarities” or compilation album.
It is essentially the From Genesis To Revelation album with a couple of early singles tacked on. It is the PRE-prog late-#60s Genesis, which I appreciate a great deal.
There’s two 1968 B-Sides here in “A Winter’s Tale” and “One Eyed Hound”, and two different versions of “Silent Sun”, which is odd, because there’s very little differences between the two versions. Maybe a slightly different mix and edit?
This is VERY different Genesis to both the weird proggy Gabriel lead band AND what came after from the three piece.
This is more of a soft #psychedelic /baroque pop outfit here. More polished, produced and arranged verse/chorus songs with string arrangements. No extended structures, nothing theatrical.
I appreciate this version of the band greatly.
