@colinburgess @stojg Ah, that insane photo. I've seen that before. I expect that weasel was probably about as freaked out as the woodpecker.

Here's another moth hitch-hiker from the Boyle where I found my springtail. We often get pseudoscorpions riding in on the moths.

This moth had the misfortune of having a pseudoscorpion hanging onto its face.

Another moss shaking find. The quality of the pictures reminds me that I ought to shake some moss again soon. My newer camera would, hopefully, do these peculiar little arachnids more justice.
If they would sit still.
Just for a second.

New sign on #BlackMountain #Canberra. A couple of the species are rather optimistic for the location, but it's a really nice selection. Even a #pseudoscorpion ...

#VermiComposting #WormFarm

I found it in my worm farm. 😭 Thought it might be a mite, but this one has claws... I also don't know how to make the picture upload clearer. I've had my bin for almost a year now, and it's the first time I've seen this.

It's about 0.5cm long. The length of the claws are the same length as its body. It looks like scorpion claws. 8 legs...

*****

After taking a break and having to go back to work, I've discovered that this is a pseudoscorpion. Turns out that they are totally harmless and actually beneficial! They eat other bugs and they ignore the worms.

They also hunt the little flies that seem to plague worm bins. So now that I know what this is, it's going back in to the bin.

Edit: Turns out there are more! When I picked up a little piece of newspaper to scoop it out of the little bowl, there were some hidden in the folds of the newspaper. Yay! Adding a few tags.

Hell yeah #pseudoscorpion !

Found a couple of these little guys in the humus while cleaning up under the old hedge.

Things I found under a polypore.

A single shelf fungus can support a community of organisms--living in and on it. Here I found three beetles and a pseudoscorpion. The very tiny rove beetle (genus Gyrophaena) and shining fungus beetle (genus Scaphisoma) are dependent on fungi. The larger beetle is a clown beetle (genus Platysoma)--they live under bark and feed on fly and beetle larvae.

No big deal, just out here finding new locales and new species all the time...but sure, fuck over our funding. If we don't know they exist we don't have to worry about protecting them, duuuuuh.

(This pseudoscorpion today was quite the surprise! Identification TBD.)
