As a #Proton user I really can't say anything bad about the services they offer.
Stable, secure, transparent, and Europe (Swiss) hosted.
Here is an invite link for 2 free weeks on a paid plan if any one wants, and it will also give you $20 to redeem on the next bill

Signed up for a proton mail account a few weeks back. (I forget why, but I think it's because the other private mail service I had been using wasn't delivering to anyone with a #gmail account, or was getting blocked from even appearing in Spam by google. Whatever. Doesn't matter.)
Anyway, I just put #ProtonMail in my spam folder. Guys, I know you have paid services and I'm thinking about it, but fuck that's some stalker-thirstly level admail...
hey fediverse - what are your thoughts on proton privacy claims? saw this IG reel that claims proton is "security theater" and curious what others think here especially about proton vpn

Si #protonmail chiffre bien vos mails, ils balance tout ce qui y'z autour :
Adresse ip
Carte de crédit
Heures de connexion etc
AUCUN SERVICE DEPENDANT DE PAYS COOPÉRANT AVEC NOUS N'EST SÛR 🤷♀️

Proton Mail: Data Transferred to FBI Again! Three documented cases. 10,368 legal orders complied with in a single year. A 94% rubber-stamp rate. The question is no longer whether Proton Mail shares user data — it's what data it shares, and whether that was ever hidden in the fine print.
I have decided that since ProtonMail's "app" for Linux is just a webapp anyway, I will simply run it in my browser and, I think, not take up twice as much RAM.
I really wish there were a desktop app that interacted with their tagging system. Perhaps I should be on a *less* security-focused email system.
one of my 2026 MSQ (main scenario quests):
Exit #proton 😄
Over the years there is just too much shady stuff going on. Every now and then they pull off something that makes me lose trust and I feel like everything is going into the wrong direction. Also I just feel like I don't want to put all eggs into one basket. Currently I use these services provided by Proton:
- email
- VPN
- Password-manager
- Their cute little AI chatbot 😅
Why am I using proton? When I degoogled in 2023, the combo of Proton + Nextcloud was a very easy route to quickly get out of the Google Ecosystem.
Since I have already migrated once, I don't feel like this is going to be a huge deal.
What I basically have to do: find alternative services, set them up, flip the switch.
VPN is easy -> #mullvad 🤩
Passwordmanager is an interesting part: I plan to use #keepassxc in combination with #syncthing. Ideally my phone and laptop will sync the vault, and my laptop will also create a synced backup with Nextcloud.
One thing I started using excessively over the last 2 years is the aliases feature of #protonpass . Not sure how I will untangle that 😅 I really like the idea to have throwaway-email addresses for different websites and being able to answer incoming mails without leaking my real email address.
the email inbox itself will be a process over months but I already migrated away from gmail and I know the process and this time it doesn't feel daunting at all. My way of migrating email is updating the mail address on a handful of services every now and then, use both email inboxes for a while and after a couple of months I should know if everything has been migrated.
Ah lets see where it goes 😊 Step one, as usual: familiarizing myself and gathering information. I'm checking out Keepass now 😎
