Race thread: 🇫🇷 Var & Alpes-Maritimes 2026, Feb 21 & 22 - Lemmings.world

What used to be the Tour du Haut-Var was split in 2 races a few years ago, each local official wanting the name of his départment to appear in the title of the race(s). Now the Tour des Alpes-Maritimes, which remained a 2-day race, is down to a one-day race too. For foreigners: both départements border the Mediterranean sea; Alpes-Maritimes is where the city of Nice stands, Var is between it and Marseille. 7 WT are engaged on both races: Astana, Bahrain, Cofidis, Decathlon, GFDJ, Lidl-Trek, Lotto-Intermarché and Picnic. They don’t seem to bring big names, which are/will be busy on other races. There will also be 5 big PT and Polti, as well as 4 French and 1 Swiss Contis. Again, there will be the same teams on both races. Costiou🇫🇷, Hirschi🇨🇭 and a fair number of Italian🇮🇹 riders are expected. -------- On Saturday, we have the Var classic. Last year, everything was played on the final wall, but this year the profile is different: the end is flat but the main course is more hilly. I notice it will be the first race of Quinn Simmons🇺🇸, which may well like the terrain, but I don’t know whether he is any good on a first racing day. It is more mountainous than the Var, but in this time of the year, it is safer to stay relatively close the coast, thus the climbs do not go over an altitude of 750 m. The finish is not on top of a climb, but when you zoom on the last ‘flat’ 25 km, they look strangely rolling, with a succession of tiny walls going up and down and not a bit of actual flat. And the last mile is uphill as well. Perhaps someone will attack in the beginning of the long Côte de Gourdon (where the line was last year, and L. Martinez🇫🇷, Scaroni🇮🇹 and Buitrago🇨🇴 battled for victory), but that’s 45 km from the line this year; otherwise after its descent in the hills of the last 25 km I guess. I would have liked to see Healy🇮🇪 on that terrain (it would also have been a good rehearsal for him before starting his year on the Drôme-Ardèche next week-end), but EF is not coming. Here I notice the first racing day of Victor Lafay🇫🇷 under the colours of Unibet. Parijs is nog ver, maar 2 minuten verliezen op een groepje renners die in de Tour knap 8ste worden, in een rit met amper 2600 hoogte meters, is nooit goed.

When a team reshapes the competitive order of the peloton, success alone is never the full story. In cycling, dominance inevitably drags history back into view. That is the context in which analyst Th…

Race thread: 🇫🇷 Tour de la Provence 2026, Feb 13–15 - Lemmings.world

link to the PCS page [https://www.procyclingstats.com/race/tour-cycliste-international-la-provence/2026] After the Marseillaise and the Star of Bessèges, we stay on the French Mediterranean border with the Tour of (the) Provence (the ‘the’ is there because ‘the Provence’ is the name of the newspaper which sponsors the race). It is again a class 1 race, but the startlist gets a bit better, and the 3 foreign WT Ineos, EF and Lidl-Trek will be there. Does it mean that the party is over for Pro Teams and Contis? This year the format is still reduced to 3 stages but mountain comes back, with the final climb of the Mountain of Lure on stage 2 (on Saturday). It is not a very steep climb but it is long. Volta Comunitat Valenciana & Etoile de Bessèges 2026

Volta Comunitat Valenciana & Etoile de Bessèges 2026 - Lemmy.World

Two lovely races this week: * Volta Comunitat Valenciana [https://www.procyclingstats.com/race/vuelta-a-la-comunidad-valenciana/2026] * Etoile de Bességes [https://www.procyclingstats.com/race/etoile-de-besseges/2026] This week we see the first races of some of the major players in the spring campaigns and the season overall. Mads Pedersen, Joao Almeida, Biniam Girmay, and Giulio Pellizari will ride their first race against Evenepoel and the cat-killer Tiberi in and around Valencia. And in the Bességes we will see French star Paul Lapeira battle it out with an assortment of other strong-but-not-quite-star rider such as Kubiš, Delettre, Costiou, Teuns and an apparently reanimated Groenewegen. Enjoy!

2026 UEC Track European championship, 1-5 Feb. - Lemmings.world

So, it has been going on for 2 days already, and I had completely forgotten about it. I guess the position so early in the year doesn’t help the visibility of this already less-visible discipline. Something I don’t understand is that I thought that, this year, it should have been part of the Super European Championship, where all cycling disciplines are gathered. It was in 2022 that Viviani won gold at the Elimination track race in the evening, after having ridden more than 200 km in the road race in the afternoon and finished 7th! While the ‘Super’ event can look rather packed, in my opinion the World version of it, in Glasgow 2 or 3 years ago, gave a much better visibility overall.
