Noyb (none of your business) digital rights organization claims "Privacy Preserving Attribution" in Firefox (which lets websites track performance of ads without tracking users) goes against GDPR because Mozilla itself still collects sensitive data:
https://www.theregister.com/2024/09/25/mozilla_noyb_privacy_complaint/
(They basically do the same as Google with Chrome and Apple with iOS. They don't let anyone else collect data except for them, so they get a massive advantage in the data market...)

Proton Drive desktop and mobile apps get open source:

(But why weren't those open source until now? 🤔️)

📣 Release Notes Privacy-Preserving Attribution is disabled. BTW, I think this is a step in the right direction for normies; but if you're already using an adblocker, then this API is pointless. R...

@thomholwerda How does this Meta thing even compare to Google Chrome’s " #PrivacySandbox " feature (analyzing your browsing history) which they have postponed numerous times already because of outcry out of the tech scene? The local Chrome thing seems to be maybe even more privacy-preserving than this third-party pseudo-anonymous ad server concept of Meta / #Mozilla /Apple?

#PrivacyPreservingAttribution

I read some of the background and technical explainer of the #Firefox 128 #PrivacyPreservingAttribution #PPA experiment, and as a replacement for tracking done via third party cookies or similar, this is pretty good. It also seems better than Chrome's version, because it's vendor neutral and doesn't put Google in an advantageous position.

#Mozilla could have handled communicating this better, though.

Firefox 128 introduces privacy-preserving attribution, allowing advertisers to measure campaign performance while protecting user privacy.

@oblomov My initial gut reaction was the same. And I still think it may be wise to opt out of this experiment until it is better understood.

But what if this initiative could indeed serve as a privacy-preserving replacement for #tracking? It looks better than all the terrible ideas Google came up with to replace cookies (#FLoC #PrivacySandbox #TopicsAPI) let alone #browserFingerprinting.

#Firefox 128 is here. With it comes a new section in the privacy and security settings called "Website Advertising Preferences" containing a ticked box labeled "Allow websites to perform privacy-preserving ad measurement".
