Government halves fuel excise for three months as $2.55 billion handout to fuel companies feeling the pinch

There, I fixed the headline for you. It used to say "Government halves fuel excise for three months to ease cost of petrol, diesel."
Pardon my cynicism, but I think servos and companies producing petrol and diesel won't pass along the full savings to customers. They'll price-gouge like they've always price-gouged. We will not see the cost of fuel fall by 26.3 cents a litre, and taxpayers will foot the bill for $2.55 billion. This is a gift from the government to fuel companies that are affected by people cutting their use of petrol and diesel.
If the Trump/Israel invasion of Iran continues more than three months, the government will repeat their misguided $2.25 Billion gesture.
Later, when the government eases-off this fuel excise cut, the fuel companies will use it as a pretext to jump up the price even further.
