"Throughout his long life, #Kaplan made many contributions to #Judaism — his landmark 1934 text “Judaism as a Civilization”; the aforementioned #Haggadah; a similarly revamped #Shabbat #prayerbook; and a new university of Judaism on the West Coast. Now his life gets reconstructed in a #biography #published last month, “#MordecaiMKaplan: Restless Soul,” by #JennaWeissmanJoselit.

“I loved #writing it,” #WeissmanJoselit told The Times of Israel of the latest volume in the #Yale University Press #Jewish Lives series. “It kept me awake at night. The questions Kaplan posed were as relevant today as they were back in his time — sometimes even more relevant.”

She explained: “I think he was worried how [Judaism] would survive simply as it was. He did not… see it as able to sustain itself. He did not see its life as guaranteed… He was determined to be its white knight...”

I transcribed and translated a Catholic Segen, a kind of activating prayer, from the 16thc Thalbach prayerbook. Here I provide Part I and an assessment of *how* the prayer works

Instead of babbling, read each morning, noon, and evening, even if it's just one or two pages from the catechism, prayer book, New Testament, or Bible. Reading a passage is better than doing nothing. #reading #bible #catechism #prayerbook

A blog post today on the Seelengärtlein (Hortulus animae), one of the hugely popular prayerbooks of the 16th century. Both a bit about how to find copies and a bit about indexing the thing. I love me a good spreadsheet! Oh, and there are woodcuts. But the Hellmouth is from a different print...

Silences And Sounds

I met with the #ProspectiveParishioner earlier this afternoon. She wanted to know where I/we stood on social issues, asked about Communion, my rosary, the difference between Rite 1 and Rite 2, and Communion.
We had a nice chat and I sent her off with a #PrayerBook to peruse.

I would just like to point out that the extra “h” added mid word as an adjunct to the “ck” is ruining my typing forever.

“junckhfraw” (= jungfrau, virgin)

Over and over and over again

I had to look up the regular spelling; I no longer know it in my bones

My first 'unboxing' post is up on the blog! Not reviewing a high-tech gadget but a #breviary. 🙏 To each his own, I guess 🤣
