So, planning on participating in #MARCHintosh this year -- broke my old #PowerMac #G3 out of storage, and it's sitting on my desk... But the only monitor I can find with a VGA socket doesn't have a power adapter... So that's the last missing piece...

The plan for this year is to back up the internal IDE drives to a CF->IDE adapter, then image the disks and throw them onto my backup server (ZFS zraid3!) for safekeeping. I have a 128GB CF card, but only 70GB of drives... So with the rest, I'll try and mirror some archives from MacintoshGarden, etc.

@rl_dane @Zenie

In 2014, my uncle gave me his old #PowerMac #G5 as he bought a new #Mac for pro video work. There was some kind of hardware issue with it, IIRC.

I had one helluva time getting #Debian installed on it. It kept failing to install the boot loader, which wasn't #GRUB. Anyway, I figured I would install #FreeBSD. It installed fine, booted fine, performance was fine, NIC supported, but....

It was a Tier 2 architecture. At that time FreeBSD, while supporting multiple ISAs, prioritized them in terms of support with x86-64 being Tier 1. Tier 2 doesn't have nearly the same level of support from the FreeBSD team.

In my case with the G5 only ports, not packages, were available. EVERYTHING had to be compiled and installed. Aside from some shells and other CLI tools, builds took ages and often failed.

Here's more info about the tiers.

I've posted all the hardware I'm giving away for now, so please scroll back and let me know if you want anything that's still unclaimed. If it was posted on or after December 9th and doesn't have an EDIT at the top saying it's been claimed, it's still up for grabs!  😆

EDIT: It has found a home!

Free to a good home: The drive sled for the 5 1/4" bay of a PowerMac. It can also accommodate a 3 1/2" drive.

EDIT: They have found a home!

Free to a good home: Four ATA cables. Two are from PowerMacs and I assume the other two are from PowerComputing clones, but I can't actually remember.

EDIT: It has found a home.

Free to a good home: A SCSI ribbon cable with connectors for 6 drives. It has 68-pin adaptors on two and a terminator at the end.

EDIT: It has found a home!

Free to a good home: A SCSI ribbon cable that accommodates three drives. The way it's folded on itself made me think it came out of a 7600, but I don't think the space between the drive connectors would allow it to reach all three SCSI bays. 🤔
