Speak, Brother, Speak! is a live album by American jazz drummer Max Roach featuring performances recorded in San Francisco in 1962 and released by the Fantasy label.

Allmusic awarded the album 3 stars stating: "The music is somewhere between hard bop and the avant-garde, and the musicians really push each other, although the results are not quite essential. Clifford Jordan fans in particular will find this to be an interesting set"

Herbie Hancock, Inventions and Dimensions, 1964 on Blue Note

Hancock is joined by Paul Chambers, Willie Bobo and Chihuahua Martinez—though it’s not really what you’d call a Latin jazz album so much as post-bop or modal.

Recorded by Rudy Van Gelder at his Englewood Cliffs studio.

My copy—direct from Blue Note—is the 2019 Blue Note 80 Vinyl Series reissue mastered for vinyl by Kevin Gray and pressed at Optimal Media GmbH – sounds great.

Melissa Aldana - Filin

Filin—derived from Feeling—is a very "romantic style" album of ballads: think Dexter Gordon, Cannonball Adderly, Ben Webster, et al.

Aldana is joined by Cuban-born Gonzalo Rubalcaba (piano), Peter Washington (bass) and Kush Abadey (drums), and Cécile McLorin Salvant (v) on a few tracks.

It's a terrific record from start to finish: great tunes, beautifully played, and well recorded.

Wayne Shorter, Schizophrenia, 1969 on Blue Note

Eleventh Wayne Shorter album, with Herbie Hancock, Curtis Fuller, Ron Carter, James Spaulding, and Joe Chambers. Recorded by Rudy Van Gelder, with Francis Wolff producing.

This is transitional between post-bop and free jazz – looser and closer to the edge than my normal taste, but worth a listen for anyone interested in post-bop or Shorter and Hancock.

My copy as part of the Story of Blue Note Records VMP Anthology, which was reissued in 2024.

Phase III by The Don Rendell / Ian Carr Quintet, released in 1968 by Columbia as part of their Landsdowne Series.

An absolute classic of British post-bop and modal jazz, incorporating complex time signatures and Eastern influences. The quintet comprises Don Rendell (tenor and soprano saxophones, flute), Ian Carr (trumpet, flugelhorn), Michael Garrick (piano), Dave Green (bass), and Trevor Tomkins (drums).

The Roy Hargrove Quintet - earfood

Easily streamed, and found on CD, but the only place to source it on vinyl is Japan.

However you get it, this 2008 release, with his touring quintet, is a delight from first (Cedar Walton's I'm Not So Sure) to last (Sam Cooke's Bring it on Home to Me).

(Gerald Clayton, on piano, is all over modern jazz LPs, including his own, and always on point.)
