Hmmm, this week's #lpotl has a neuroscientist on, talking about post concussion syndrome. It's fascinating.

Quick update on myself medically.
History: On 19th February 2021 I received a concussion, and developed Post Concussion Syndrome.
Most of the symptoms faded over the years, but this year they came back strongly.
These days my mind is so focussed, but only for 4-6 hours. After that time I totally fade and need to nap to "reset my brain". Once napped I am good to go again.
I informed my Primary Care and she:
a) Referred me back to Baptist Health Neurology. That appointment is on 18 June 2025.
b) Wrote a note for my Director and HR Director at God's Pantry Food Bank:
"To Whom It May Concern: Please allow Peter Paterson (04/30/1967) to work from home as needed as he is recovering from post-concussion syndrome and requires frequent rest. If there are any further questions please contact our office."
My Directors have worked with me, and allowing me to work split days and work from home days.

Today I shall be going into work for at least 4 hours, catch up on Friday's paperwork, come on home, nap, eat lunch, and work for the rest of my 8 hours remotely. #FoodBank

Take care of yourself my friends and for ALL around you.

Living with Mild Brain Injury: The Difficulties of Diagnosis and Recovery from Post-Concussion Syndrome

This important book presents a unique, personal account of the impact a mild traumatic brain injury can have. It tells the story of Pauline, who was 33 when a late football tackle caused a bleed in her brain which went undiscovered for 18 months. The account includes descriptions of hidden symptoms of concussion and post-concussion syndrome, pitfalls in diagnoses, the uneven progress of recovery and the effect of the varied reactions which others have to an acquired brain injury. The date is 19th of February and is significant for at least 2 reasons:
1) It is the birthday of my San Francisco based pen-pal Susan Carli. We have known each other since I was 15, yet we have yet to meet. I did text her after my midnight.
#PenPal #Birthday
2) 4 years ago today I received a concussion, which led to post concussion syndrome. I still have some of the symptoms, but thankfully not the headaches.
At the time Arianna, my work bosses, and many of my good friends were highly concerned for me as I had to use a lot of medical family leave to get stable.
God has been really good in His healing and guiding.

God's Pantry Food Bank remains in Disaster Relief Mode with all the flooding in Kentucky.
Feeding America and fellow Food Banks have been excellent in stepping up to assist us and our neighbours.

Today is the bid deadline for the 6 truckloads of food that I sent out last week to 10 vendors. I am sure the results are going to be interesting. We normally go with the lowest bid, but there are other factors to consider.

No Church growth group tonight, as the family that hosts us is away this week.

Keep safe and well my friends.
I pray God keeps you safe.

I wish people were more understanding toward those who have suffered #TBI and #postconcussionsyndrome related changes. I suffered both due to a vehicle related accident where I was a passenger in 2006. I already had pre-existing #depression + #ptsd in my late teens/early 20's. Oh then I had a bout of COVID and am dealing with #LongCovid related symptoms, largely difficulty breathing with exertion and increased fatigue, plus the possibility of cognitive changes exist there. I function well with certain/specific activities but struggle with others. I know my weaknesses. I am honest about my weaknesses. I've done all the therapies. I am at maximum medical improvement and as close to baseline as possible. I wish folks knew it wasn't my fault..that I didn't ask for this and am trying to get by the same as everyone else. I am just #tired, so very tired.

I've been extremely interested in #FreeBSD lately, and I kind of want to hack on a kernel that's very easy to build and modify, as well as well documented, without having to work in a VM (I hate VMs), and I also want to learn how to actually mod computer hardware, plus I want a machine that's extremely durable and reliable as a backup and something to take with me on trips or to class, since my workstation laptop is too expensive for that, and I don't care about size or weight since I don't take textbooks with me and keep it in my backpack.

So what did I do?

I found a #ThinkPad T420 with a Core i5, 8GB of RAM, and an discrete GPU for $60 on eBay and got one. (My gf also got one bc she wants to experiment with Arch Linux).

It's... probably a complete waste of money, especially since I'm actually in no condition lately to DO anything with it, but hopefully I'll get back to the point where I can program a little every day again in a few weeks. #postconcussionsyndrome is very up and down, and I just overworked myself way too much recently and that's what's caused this latest setback (I was to the point where I could program for a few hours a day about a week ago, but then I worked 8 hours one day and that sort of sent me on a downward spiral).
