We managed to get a vacation in this autumn after all! We've improved our financial situation enough to afford a trip up to the upper peninsula (UP) of Michigan for hiking around the Porcupine Mountains region.

And we lucked out for color! The red maples may be past their prime, but the sugar maples are filling the woods with bright yellows and fluorescent oranges.

Plus: SNOW! We knew it was going to get below freezing last night, but it persisted into the day with flurries and outright snow, especially at the higher altitudes in the Porcupine "Mountains".

Today is our last day of #hiking in the #Porkies (Porcupine Mountain Wilderness) with the #huskies. We're back mostly inland, which means mega blackfly swarms, but tolerable with headnets. After a minor knee injury on yesterday's hike, we chose a shorter, flatter route today. Here everyone's taking a break in Pinkerton Creek.
