The Old Toll House on the Southside of Glasgow, with Pollokshaws Road in the distance. It was built in the 1820s to collect tolls from the users of the turnpike roads which were created in the latter half of the 18th century to connect Glasgow to the towns of ayrshire to its southwest.

Love this crow-stepped gables and roof vent combination on Robert Rowand Anderson's 1890s Scots Baronial style Pollokshaws Burgh Hall on the Southside of Glasgow.

In the background is the 1905 Stag Building, named after the pub on its ground floor. To the left is modern housing, built in the last few years on the site of the former Shawbridge Arcade, built in the 1970s and demolished in the early 2020s after becoming derelict.
Layers of history in Pollokshaws on the Southside of Glasgow. At the centre of the picture is the last surviving remnant of the old Pollokshaws Burgh buildings, constructed in 1803. In the foreground stone inscribed with a poem by James McIndoe titled the Queer Folk of the Shaws. This was a term originally applied to Flemish Weavers who were brought to the area in the early 1800s, but later broadened to mean anyone from the local area.

There has been a pub on this site since at least the 1880s, when it was the Old Stag. However, the current built, known locally as the stag building, was constructed in 1905. Alongside the pub at that time was a chemist shop (Carmichaels Chemists) and a dairy (Dougie’s Dairy).

A lone blonde sandstone tenement on Greenview Street in the Pollokshaws area of Glasgow. Such orphaned tenements, left standing when those around them were demolished between the 1950s and 1980s, often only survived because it was too expensive for the local council to buy out the licence for the pub on the ground floor.

Hopefully, it can be saved in some form or other, but history in Glasgow is not on its side. As always in cases like this, it is likely to depend on insurance, and in particular the willingness of an insurance company to make a sufficient pay-out in a timely fashion.

The B-listed Pollokshaws Church on Shawbridge Street in the Southside of Glasgow photographed today. One of the last surviving buildings from old Pollokshaws, it was built in a Georgian style in 1843 as the Pollokshaws Original Secession Church. Unfortunately, it was very badly damaged by a fire over the weekend, and is now little more than a shell.

St Mary Immaculate Church in the Pollokshaws area of Glasgow. Built on a hill overlooking the surrounding houses, it's a beautiful little Gothic style Victorian church. Designed by W. Nicholson, it was constructed in 1865.
