"The politics for people that I am promoting would reject the idea of anyone being #disposable. As a result, we could have a caring economy, but it would be more efficient, resilient, and democratic as a consequence, because everyone would be included. And if you use all the resources that everyone can bring to the economy, guess what? You have a bigger, stronger, and better economy where incomes are higher." #RichardMurphy

You are not disposable

Modern economics behaves as if some people simply do not matter. In this video, I reject that idea outright. Neoliberal economic policy treats people as costs, blames them for failures they did not create, and deliberately excludes those who do not contribute to its narrow definition of “productivity”. Disabled people, carers,...

Career Sundays: Science, Engineering, Medicine, Innovation and Society

A human body cannot be reduced to a machine. It has politics, social lives, emotions, and personal/collective histories that need to be approached through a critically- and historically-informed lens.

Chapter 5: Towards an ethics-of-ethics for responsible innovation

Responsible innovation is an emerging social movement, concept and practice in governance of science and technology. Yet, responsible innovation cannot be fully understood without its historical origins and the gravitational pulls that are impacting its development. Responsible innovation is emerging against a backdrop of: (1) bioethics scholarship that has been transformed over the past two decades such that a major wing of the discipline has adopted a utilitarian science enabler functionalist role situated in immediate proximity (and perhaps too close) to the science and technology actors; and (2) the field of science and technology studies (STS), which has traditionally offered critical insights into the backstage of science and technology, deconstructing the ways in which context, power and politics play an ever-present role in scientific knowledge co-production. In in this chapter I propose that for responsible innovation to evolve in a manner that is as socially responsive and responsible as the science it seeks to shape, a new epistemic layer of inquiry should be added, termed ethics-of-ethics. Recognition of ethics-of-ethics would foster greater reflexivity on the importance of processes of knowing, not only in natural science and technology, but also in social sciences and humanities. Such nested governance and independent cross-checking of knowledge co-production in both science and ethics would ensure that scientist, social scientist, humanists and ethicist are held accountable through transparency, for example, in the epistemological choices made, the upstream agendas created and the ends to which socio-technical analyses are intended to serve.

Career Sundays: Science, Engineering, Medicine, Innovation and Society

It is wonderful and rewarding to be an engineer, but not when the ideology and regime of technocracy dominates engineering and overlooks the societal consequences of engineering design and action on people, communities and ecosystems. Engineering is social, has a social & political life, ethics, and ethics-of-ethics.

Fugitive Feminism by Akwugo Emejulu

here is an account of Liv and her husband’s story from their friend who knows them better. they have faced a great deal of abuse and racism that have made it impossible to get the resources they need. Liv’s situation has continued to become more dire since a few weeks ago when this account was written.

content warning on the images for abuse, racism, poverty, ableism, just a lot of stuff

fuck. i really hate our medical system.

i’ve been in contact with a woman who is severely ill and in a medical crisis, and she badly needs funds to get her medication. i am somewhat reluctant to ask for this because i don’t know this person that well, but she is kind of running out of options from everything i can tell.

i truly don’t expect anyone to be able to help, but if anyone at all can chip in, i’ll pass along her venmo.

i have been supporting her as much as i can but am a bit stretched financially and can’t do everything she needs on my own. it also seems like she has been experiencing a lot of medical racism and abuse in the healthcare system.

finally if anyone is local to Florida (central Florida) and might be able to give her any support in person, that would be amazing. i don’t dare to hope for that but i have to ask.
