Talk to the people near to you. Explain what your feelings are, and don't feel shame or guilt about not going. While it's sometimes good to push boundaries and be brave, it's not okay to put yourself into a dangerous place just to keep friends and family happy.

I've lost friends before because I wasn't willing to go to an event and called out. They weren't willing to listen to my concerns and/or dismissed them. You don't need that kind of friendship, and neither did I.
