I realize I have no words to describe those who are not outraged by this #abuse of #PolicePower. This is among the horrors of dictatorship that were cited to me as one example of how evil the #totalitarians of the early to mid 20th century were, and how much better the USA was.

I don't hate #cops or #police. I've had many interactions with them, in my professional + personal lives, and I am fully aware that there are many well-meaning people who go into law enforcement with the best of intentions, who believe in serving the public.
That doesn't prevent me from recognizing that #policing & #PolicePower has structural, institutionalized problems. Nor does it prevent me from pointing out that even the Bible says the road to iniquity is paved with the best of intentions.

Influential civil rights lawyer, professor, and expert on police brutality, Paul Chevigny has died at the age of 88. As a lawyer with the New York Civil Liberties Union, Chevigny founded the Police Practices Project and published two books on abusive policing, including the seminal “Police Power.” In the 1971 case Handschu v. Special Services Division, he successfully challenged the NYPD’s surveillance of political organizations, which at the time included the Black Panther Party and anti-Vietnam War activists. He went on to write about police violence in other countries, including Brazil, Argentina and Jamaica. As a professor at NYU Law, he inspired legions of students. Paul Chevigny is survived by two children, including the filmmaker Katy Chevigny.
A significant part of the value of money lies in the fact that it can be exchanged for labor. The value of money depends on a reliable supply of workers-for-hire. But if people aren't willing to work for money then that part of money's value is gone. Without a sufficient pool of laborers for hire having a lot of money doesn't mean much. But without police people may choose to work directly for subsistence or other reasons rather than for money. The more people that make this choice the fewer workers for hire are available, so the less value money has. The labor theory of value in some sense incorporates a police theory of value.
This idea is part of a long-term project of mine to understand the ramified role police play in creating the modern world. It's important to me b/c I think all mainstream economic theories omit the role of the police in maintaining capitalism. Just for instance they all treat labor supply as a natural resource rather than something painstakingly created and maintained through police violence. Here's a recent installment in this project:
