Poke-do in Sendai: 5/5 Diamond. The cheapest prices I found in all of Japan.

Excellent variety of sealed, singles, and accessories. Nobody talks about this shop online. 8th floor near Sendai station, completely off the tourist radar.

Cash Only, so bring your yen. If you can add Sendai to your itinerary, Poke-do alone justifies the bullet train ticket.

I bought Gold Star Mewtwo from Laurie Honpo and Stormfront Charizard from C-Labo Akihabara. Both were labeled "damaged." Both were in excellent condition by Western standards.

The Mewtwo came from a 4.5/5 rated shop. The Charizard from a C-Labo with great damaged card prices.

Always inspect "damaged" cards yourself.

I translated the entire 308-page Pokémon card guide into 27 languages.

Thai, Arabic, Korean, Hindi, Mandarin, Japanese, French, Spanish, German, Portuguese, and 17 more.

When collectors from Brazil, Thailand, and the Middle East started asking about Japan shops, I realized English wasn't enough. Finding a Gold Star at a fair price shouldn't require reading English.

Two travel essentials every Pokémon card hunter needs in Japan: an eSIM and a power bank.

I relied on my phone constantly to check prices, navigate Google Maps, and translate Japanese text. A dead phone in Akihabara means flying blind on pricing.

Get an eSIM before you land. A power bank keeps you going through 8+ hour shopping days.

Is the Pokémon card guide still up to date?

Chains like C-Labo, Ninnin, and Sunrise are consistently good across all their branches. C-Labo's Tax Free and loyalty card? Always there. Ninnin's Gold Star selection? Consistent.

The guide teaches you patterns, not just addresses. Patterns don't expire.

Osaka's Den Den Town: the Akihabara of Western Japan.

C-Labo Otaroad (4.5/5): Amazing yellow sticker prices. Found my Gyarados Gold Star.
Sunrise Osaka (4.75/5): Phenomenal prices, friendly staff. Found my Latias Gold Star.
Bar Unknown (4.75/5): Cool vibes, great drinks, unexpected gems.
Ninnin Osaka (4.25/5): Got my Suicune Gold Star.

Den Den Town delivers.

Bring your own toploaders to Japan. Most Pokémon card purchases don't include one.

I packed 50 toploaders and penny sleeves in my carry-on before every trip. After spending hundreds on Gold Stars and Vintage holos, the last thing you want is a bent corner from bouncing around in a bag.

Shops will sleeve cards, but rigid protection is on you.

Shizuoka: a bullet train stop between Tokyo and Osaka that most tourists skip entirely.

Surugaya Flagship (4.25/5): The largest Surugaya in Japan. Amazing Modern and Vintage at fair prices.
C-Labo Shizuoka (4.5/5): One of the best C-Labos. Tax Free, great damaged cards.

Shizuoka is worth a half-day stop on your Tokyo-to-Osaka route.

Sunrise is an underrated chain for Pokémon card collectors in Japan.

Osaka (4.75/5): Phenomenal prices. Found my Latias Gold Star. Ask about discounts on big cards.
Fukuoka (4.25/5): Free pack for a Google review.
Hiroshima (4/5): Mega Dream boxes for cheap.

The key: always check their damaged card showcases first. That's where the real deals hide.
