Entranced by silence
Dignitaries of ephemeral
Muses, whisper lush
Secrets to the quiet
Evening, fragrant
Blossoms lull my heart
As my consciousness
Dissolves into a thousand
Breathlessly beautiful sunsets

Migration

(For Margaret Thatcher)

The blue sky reflected nothing of the town;
its population heading south in Ford Escorts,

in lorries, by boat, hanging to the sides of milk-floats,
on blistered feet, some pushing half-empty wheelbarrows,

others hauling sofas, the family dresser, a wireless,
various spoons, empty pop-bottles (10p refund on return),

calculator watch, the obligatory sink; passing others
heading north towards the spoils of war.
