Maybe I should tell them about the time
I got lost in hills of Antarctica
while looking for the girl with seven hearts
who used to sing on the opera stage,
performing roles of tragic heroines
who always lament

Dig it—
I’m wedged in this apartment,
packed tighter than a drumskin,
boxes humming low like midnight basslines,
air thick with everyone’s stories
stacked to the ceiling.

I’m perched on the edge of maybe,
waiting for that golden jangle—
the key,
the myth,
the brass-ring promise
from the housing-association gods.

I’m hoping they’re feeling generous next week,
in early-gifting mood,
hearts soft as jazz at sunrise,
ready to drop that blessed metal note
right into my empty palm.

’Cause I’m here, baby,
in the crush and clutter,
tapping time with restless feet,
dreaming of the door that opens
and the room that breathes.

Till then, I wait—
cool, patient,
beat steady.
Any minute now:
click
& a new door opens.
