#po4a was released today. It helps maintaining the translations of your documentation.

We have new format modules (org, vim-help and SimplePod -- future replacement of our aging pod parser), fixes & new features for the AsciiDoc, Markdown, TeX and Texinfo, some code modernization and many translations. Thanks to all.

This release is dedicated to Simone Weil, whose ideas and commitment remain inspirational. But please people, do not die for your ideas the way she did.

Status update of my public activity for the last month. With some FOSS activity (because I had some this month, on #po4a), teaching activities (C++, didactic), administrative duties, some research activities on #SimGrid, on the #SmolPhone and on other #LowTech and #FrugalComputing thingies.

Status update: January 2024

I just released #po4a v0.69 https://github.com/mquinson/po4a/releases/tag/v0.69

po4a eases documentation translations and their maintenance. It extracts the translatable material from the original document, and places it into a PO file that is adapted to the translation process. Once this PO file is updated by the translator, po4a re-injects the translation into the structure of the original document to generate a translated document.

This version sanitizes the internal code around YAML and improves placeholders in XML.

The 2 next issues I'd like to solve in #po4a are https://github.com/mquinson/po4a/issues/272 which really improves the user experience, and https://github.com/mquinson/po4a/blob/master/lib/Locale/Po4a/TransTractor.pm#L1354 that would allow the use of #po4a for new formats (such as debconf in Debian, or desktop files).

If someone wants to rewrite it in another prog language, why not. The test suite shall be useful for that. But I won't do it myself. Perl is oldish, but it still does the job for now.

Thanks for your support, @jibec ;)

Feature request: file globbing · Issue #272 · mquinson/po4a

(Per our discussion on IRC) Please implement file globbing in po4a configuration files. Sometimes you have a lot of source files and listing them one by one, and keeping the list updated, is cumber...

A new release of #po4a (with PRs from several ppl -- thanks to them) will be out this week-end, once the translators update their work.

It was my thesis avoidance project 20 years ago. Someone maintained it 10 years, I took it back but a new volunter is needed: https://www.volunteeramnestyday.net

@ben_crowell_fullerton hello Ben. I would very much like to help with the translations of your books to any languages, especially French my mother tongue, as they are #oer. Maybe the tools #po4a & the #gettext tools can help. Another idea is to share them on #wikibooks & use them as références for courses on #wikiversity possibly, the #mastodonCommunity could help for technical bits. Hope to read you soon.

https://pagure.io/fedora-docs-l10n/docs/c/6d985276e9f64579053264f9e48fadb3a1d993d2?branch=master
