El otro día empecé #Plur1bus y no pude dejar de pensar que es una de mis partidas de la Navidad contagia la felicidad del Plague Inc.

I'm so fed up with shows that could be wrapped up in one additional episode but get another season to squeeze the last bit of money out of it.

Bonus points if the second season is planned 2-3 years in the future.

Just to be clear, I mean in the history of television, broadcast, cable, and streaming, made in the United States for the U.S. market, my frame of reference.

It hit me today, and maybe I'm wrong, but I think Plur1bus is the only major tv show not focused on race, just human humans on Earth, where most of the main characters are not white (just 1) 🤯 👏🏿

They deliberately chose to not make white the default for humanity, in a show about humanity.

A subtle hint it's intentional was Koumba reminding Carol that she chose to exclude non-English speakers.

It's a creative decision I applaud.

At the end of the day, I think Pluribus (or PLUR1BUS) is a mixed bag. Interesting ideas, but flawed execution.

Things I thought were great:

+ This is far from the usual "aliens travel millions of km to invade the earth because they need water" trope that TV/movies usually serve us. The trope is often a non-starter. Why travel that far for water???? "Haha, yes. We've passed by millions of liters of water, just to invade the Earth."

+ I was also happy with the idea that the people who had been turned did not turn out to be space Nazis just because they were turned. I was happy that they couldn't lie, and were trying to maximize happiness all around. Again, this goes against trope.

+ It totally makes sense that we'd be contacted by aliens through radio rather than by them just traveling over.

+ Carol evolved throughout the show.

Things they get a pass on:

* It is the first time in my life that I hear about stem cell therapy working by inhalation. However, they need the stem cells, but maybe the thing that the girl inhales is not stem cells, but made from them. Also, this is sci-fi so... yeah... they could have had technology so advanced that this makes sense. I did a double take, but they get a pass about this.

[For the record, I'm a cancer survivor who has had a stem cell transplant.]

Things I did not like:

- The first season could have easily been two episodes shorter, maybe even three. I recall in Breaking Bad some episodes that really felt like unnecessary filler.

- They never explained how humanity's brutality towards other human beings was handled by the "others." If someone screaming at one "other" can send them all into spasms, why is the memory of the trauma that humans inflict upon another not doing the same?

- I'm baffled as to why Carol did not think to ask about my previous point. There are much more horrifying consequences to the collective mind than "your son is also your gynecologist."

[For the two previous points, see this previous post of mine:

https://mast.yourautisticlife.com/@yourautisticlife/115831915937796533]

- I'm not on board with the need to have the stem cell transplant procedure explained in details. They could have left it as "we need your stem cells and would require your consent to undergo this invasive medical procedure." There! No need to go into details about needles in bones. (On the other hand, I do understand why they had to specify stem cells. If they had said "we need your DNA," then they could have obtained it very easily since we shed DNA all over the place.)

[See this post for more details about stem cell transplants:

Things that perplex me:

* Manousos apparently tries to pull an "other" out of the collective mind with a radio in the last episode. Maybe he just does not know how radios work? What he has in hand is a receiver. It cannot affect anything else. He'd need a transmitter for this. It really depends on what his background is. The internet tells me he's a storage facility manager. So that he wouldn't really understand radios is plausible.

So, as I said above, a mixed bag.

(I did not think this would be a regular feature, but here we are...)

In this episode, Diabaté tells Carol that they cannot be turned without their consent. He explains that's because the "others" need stem cells, and that would involve sticking a large needle into the bone of the hip.

I've got a stem cell transplant for my cancer treatment. I can assure you that my stem cells were harvested without inserting a needle into the bone of my hip.

They could have kept the explanation to the idea that the "others" would have to submit the humans that weren't turned yet to a medical procedure, and that this would require consent. It's already been well established by that time that they don't want to do stuff without consent.

Why gild the lily with poo by over explaining?

Yes, it is possible to harvest stem cells by sticking a needle into the bone marrow, but that's a procedure that is no longer *normally* used, because it is highly invasive.

My stem cells were harvested as follows. In the days prior to the day of harvest, I injected myself with a product that would stimulate the production of stem cells and push them into my bloodstream. Then I spent one morning at the hospital hooked to a machine that looks like a dialysis machine. This machine took the stem cells out of my blood. Much less invasive than having a needle stuck into your hipbone.

😩

I still like the show, but man...

Okay. I really love #PLUR1BUS and I'm happy, that chances are high for upcoming seasons, because usually tv shows I like are getting nowadays canceled after season one or two.
