I'd almost completely forgotten about the existence of "Play By Mail" games, but apparently they were big enough to warrant as much coverage as consoles. The "It's a Crime" ad feels like it was everywhere in the late 80s. And Wayne might be the most 80s dude imaginable.

I seem to remember being deeply intrigued by them. But then I got in with a DnD/Warhammer group and probably saved myself a tonne of money in postage.

Ich möchte im nächsten Jahr endlich eine Art #PlayByMail #ttrpg aufziehen, mit Postkarten. Hauptsächlich, weil ich Bock habe, ganz viele Postkarten zu bekommen und zu verschicken. Auf etwas Klassisches mit Spielzügen hab ich nicht so Lust. Wie könnte denn bloß eine Fantasy/SF-Ausrede aussehen, sich ingame-Post zu schicken?

@benni Verständlich - hast du schon mal daran gedacht, dich an dauerhaftem, kollaborativem #Weltenbau zu beteiligen? Decades ago, children played the board game Risk and adults played Diplomacy. While the point of Diplomacy is strategy, it has the “press” where you write news articles in-game.

Some Manitobans 🇨🇦 decided to de-emphasize gameplay in favor of world-building. They collaborated 📬 with others 🌎 to tell the story 📰 of Slobbovia. Military gameplay continued, but telling a fun story was more valuable.

Kennt irgend jemand von Euch noch #Postspiele, auch Play by Mail #PbM genannt? Das waren rundenbasierte Strategiespiele bei denen man meist einmal wöchentlich einem Spielleiter die Befehle für einen Zug schickte. Dabei konnte man meist auch noch Mitteilungen an bestimmte Mitspieler schicken um mehr oder weniger geheime Allianzen zu bilden. Der Spielleiter hat dann die Züge ausgewertet und die Ergebnisse dann in einem Spielezine veröffentlicht und das den Spielern zugeschickt. Es gab unzählige Spielezines und unzählige verschieden Spiele. Mit #Diplomacy eine Art Risiko, oder The Ashes of Empire als Science Fiktion Variante. Für Ashes of Empire gab es sogar eine OpenSource Software zur Auswertung der Züge für den Atari ST. Es gab sogar kommerzielle Anbieter, der bekannteste im deutschsprachigem Raum war Peter Stevens. Dort gab es mit #Feudalherren ein sehr interessantes Mittelalterspiel. Aber irgendwie scheint der den Sprung ins Internet nicht geschafft zu haben.

Das ganze gab es bis irgendwann in den 90ern. Der Postweg wurde erst durch eMail ersetzt dann komplett durch den Computer. Mich würde mal interessieren, ob es noch irgendwo auf irgendwelchen halbvergessenen Servern die entsprechenden Auswertungsprogramme gibt.

At the back of the short rulebook it says “If you would like to receive details of further advanced and optional rules, please send an S.A.E. (stamped addressed envelope) to the inventor…” followed by the designer’s address. For any young’uns reading this - that was pretty common back in the day.

No chance he still lives at that address though, right? It’s been 27 years, for goodness sake! But also… Maybe! So I sent an S.A.E. together with a short letter (handwritten and everything) and included my email address, because we now live in THE FUTURE. Worth a shot, I thought. If nothing else, if it reaches him, it would be a nice thing to receive after all these years.

This morning, an email from the designer arrived in my inbox. He wrote “yes, we're still here, and as you suspect, it's quite nice to have a message about Fireside Football after a long time” and he attached some documents from “an archive copy from a CD backup” including a 4,672 word history of the game (written around 20 years ago).
“Also, I've made up some stuff for your padded envelope. There's a spare set of dice, counters, etc, and also some semi-blank player cards.”

So here I am, transported back to when I was a young’un myself, once again waiting for the postie. :)
