"This Week in Plasma" brings the news that System Settings' pages become "smart" and can mark themselves as "not relevant" if, for example, you do not have the hardware to use them. They can also export actions to the sidebar, allowing you to quickly toggle devices on and off. And Discover can now be opened directly from Install buttons on FlatHub.

Read about this, and much more in Nate's blog post:

#Plasma6 #OpenSource #FreeSoftware #desktop

Aamu alkaa työnteolla. Tosin harrastusluonteisella eli palkattomalla sellaisella: tein taas #KDEPlasma-käännöksen ajoittaiset ylläpitotoimet ja käänsin jonoja paristakymmenestä tiedostosta #Plasma6:sta, jota en vielä itse edes käytä! Seuraavan käyttispäivityksen yhteydessä se minullekin saapunee. #kotoistaminen #l10n #floss #linux

It looks like I have some difficulties choosing a #FreeBSD #desktop :)

#XFCE4 is kind of light, and has some lovely perks (use scroll wheel to reduce any window to its title bar, and to change virtual desktops). Thunar needs less tuning than Dolphin to match my preferences. And it’s easy to get rid of unwanted buttons in session menus (sleep/restart/shutdown… that I don’t need, for it’s an always on PC).

#Plasma6 is instantly gorgeous and is very appealing, I want to use it. But it looks like many bits are tuned for Linux out of the box and don’t work well / as intended on FreeBSD. For a start, there is a complete and detailed sound control panel that just won’t work, event though my sound is just working. And don’t let me start about the taskbar widgets. Also, it’s "heavier" than XFCE4.
I don’t understand its Keyboard control panel, by the way. I’ve lost a week to that thing trying to configure my KB layout before giving up and moving to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/00-keyboard.conf

I feel more at home with XFCE4 but Plasma 6 in wearing a red dress!

(It's a pretty cool concept overall, but I think giving KDE Plasma for Linux newcomers isn't really the best idea, because the tons of customization options, and occasional bugs here and there might scare away some Windows users. I would rather give them Zorin OS with their customized version of GNOME, or Linux Mint / LMDE with Cinnamon. (No, I'm not a KDE hater, I think it's a great option for those who want to fully customize their desktop experience, or the PewDiePie type of guys who already adopted the mindset of tweaking around, playing around with the options, not wanting to go back to Windows when encountering a bug, but it's not for every newcomer.))
