Much-needed pot upgrade for Nepenthes (maxima “miniature” x “Miranda”) x clipeata, HC D. This is currently my favorite of the four clones I kept, because of its ridiculously slender traps and very pale, sparsely mottled exterior contrasting with a fairly starkly striped peristome and mottled interior. Jury’s still out on whether these will remain small like their miniaturized parent seems to trend toward in its offspring, or if the clipeata influence will overtake and make giant oblong leaves. So far even the biggest one though remains under a foot across, if only just.

Not the flashiest thing, but this is the first flower I’ve seen open on Linaria aeruginea! Commonly called Roadside Toadflax, this Iberian native is supposedly a cold-hardy perennial so it’ll be finding a planting spot outside next spring, and develops little clumps of stems sporting slender leaves and topped in snapdragon-like flowers. This purple/yellow form is a fairly common color, but the species can come in a vast range of patterns and expressions from white to yellow to red and blotched with brown, yellow, orange, pink, or various other hues. As I have multiple plants from multiple seed origins, there will likely be a big variation once they’re all settled and blooming, and with any luck my fourth attempt at getting their relative Alpine Toadflax to sprout and grow will succeed this time, adding to the variety.

Getting a much-needed repot, Nepenthes x splendiana x mixta clone D.
This cross resulted in some extremely divergent plants, with one mimicking Ruby Alice (if you’re familiar with that Leilani plant you know…), another of similar color but a stockier hunchbacked profile, one extremely slender and pastel-hued individual, and then this plant which looks mostly like x mixta with strong northiana traits shining through, except also distinctly not just that parent showing traits in it. It produces some of the broadest, toughest leaves in the grex too, but has been rootbound and shaded for so long that it’s never gotten to really take off. Hopefully that changes now, and I can get it to vine and bloom before cutting one of the two rosette tips it’s got.

New video out!
Another mid-week plant spotlight here, this time highlighting a sundew that comes in varieties that fit just about everyone's growing conditions: Drosera intermedia! Whether you want a tiny or a big plant, a temperate or an evergreen tropical, brick red or all-green, there's a version in this species fit for you.

Glowing in the afternoon sun, Chilean Glory Vine (Eccremocarpus scaber) is still flowering strong and producing pods loaded with seeds. This plant is quite prolific, though definitely a plant you have to set and leave alone wherever you want it to vine as it is also quite delicate.
Many, many packets of seeds currently available in the website Shop (which can be found visiting the website link in profile).

New arrival!
Probably the most common clone of Nepenthes sanguinea in cultivation right now is the “orange” one, a sturdy and very easy grower however not very reflective of the species name. This one however (BE-4066), is; “sanguinea” more or less translates to “blood colored” in reference to how some of the most common and standout plants in the wild are deep, rich red to purplish. In some cases very dark colors are due to introgression particularly with ramispina, though those plants tend to show other traits from that species too (narrower angular pitchers with more pronounced hips, mottling in the background and bright green peristomes, etc.), but these more saturated reds and purples are pure sanguinea. This is a very small plant right now though the pitcher ratio it’s arrived with is impressive, but eventually it could get to making foot-tall traps.

Another new ornamental edible in the greenhouse: Talinum paniculatum.
Commonly referred to as Fameflower or Jewels of Opar (apparently a title taken from a Tarzan novel), this American native is found from the southeast US through the Caribbean and into northern South America. When just in vegetative stage it’s moderately attractive, with thick red stems and bright green to yellowish succulent leaves, but it’s when it starts flowering that it puts on a show. Short stalks slowly grow taller and more complex, throwing out peduncles in all directions that begin popping open with tiny but hot pink flowers that quickly develop into brilliant jewel-like orange-red berries. Once the whole scape is finished it looks like a floating cloud of sparkling gems above the soft leaf carpet below them, and they are quite popular as a soft texture addition to cut flower arrangements.
As said before it’s not just pretty, but also edible; the leaves are kind of like spinach with just a little bit of other flavor in them (I tried one, can’t quite explain it) and so quite good for a rich salad.

Another of the many new and unusual things coming up in the greenhouse: Malabar Spinach!
Basella alba ‘Rubra’ is the red-stemmed variant of this tropical vine, a plant of dual use: edible and ornamental. As the common name suggests it has qualities similar to spinach with thick succulent oval or heart shaped leaves and juicy stems that can be eaten raw in salads or cooked like its counterpart. Hailing from somewhere in tropical Asia (exact origin unknown as it’s been grown and distributed for so long), it thrives in the heat of summer when regular spinach bolts and then dies away, reaching up to 10 feet or more in length if allowed. If soils turn dry they’ll throw tiny little whitish pink flower spikes from between the leaves, producing black berries with staining dye qualities that hold the seeds.
Quite a few other odd edibles are reaching photographable size, so expect a few similar posts soon.

FINALLY, I caught a bloom open: Drosera spatulata ‘Tamlin’ x ultramafica.
A true spat x ultra cross, unlike the commonly traded plants that are just a large spatulata. These guys possess the stiffer, longer petioles and slightly more pronounced stipules, as well as slightly larger flower profile, of ultramafica, as well as the more leaf-happy growth habit and flatter profile of spatulata. And confirming my suspicions because none of the spent flowers before this one are even remotely filling up: the actual hybrid is sterile.

First flowers and pods developing on the indoor Sugar Magnolia snap pea; the flowers being hot pink aren’t too unusual for peas, but the deep maroon-purple pods are.
