Spring pruning time for the Sarracenia collection! 🌿
After winter, it's time to remove all the old pitchers to make room for the fresh new growth. Each plant produces dozens of pitchers throughout the year, and by early spring they've done their job catching insects and providing energy to the plant. Now they're brown and ready to be cut back. I ended up with a full basket of old pitchers - a clear sign of a healthy, productive collection. This annual pruning helps prevent fungal issues and allows sunlight to reach the emerging new growth that will soon unfurl.

Na de winter is het tijd om alle oude bekers weg te knippen en plaats te maken voor de verse nieuwe groei. Elke plant produceert tientallen bekers doorheen het jaar, en tegen het vroege voorjaar hebben ze hun werk gedaan door insecten te vangen en energie aan de plant te leveren. Nu zijn ze bruin en klaar om afgeknipt te worden. Ik eindigde met een volle mand oude bekers - een duidelijk teken van een gezonde, productieve collectie. Dit jaarlijkse snoeien helpt schimmelziektes voorkomen en laat zonlicht door tot de ontluikende nieuwe groei die binnenkort zal ontrollen.

Winter heating is tough on tropical plants like calathea 🌿 The dry indoor air during heating season can cause those crispy brown leaf edges you see in the photo. Calatheas (Calathea spp.) naturally come from humid tropical forests, so they really feel it when our homes drop to 30-40% humidity in winter.
Some solutions that help: grouping plants together creates a microclimate with higher humidity, placing a water tray near (not under) the plant adds moisture to the air, and misting occasionally can provide temporary relief. Moving the plant away from radiators and heating vents also makes a big difference.
It's a reminder that even indoor plants have seasonal challenges! 💚

Verwarmen in de winter is een uitdaging voor tropische planten zoals calathea 🌿 De droge binnenlucht tijdens het stookseizoen zorgt voor die knapperige bruine bladranden die je op de foto ziet. Calatheas (Calathea spp.) komen van nature uit vochtige tropische bossen, dus ze voelen het echt wanneer de luchtvochtigheid in onze huizen daalt naar 30-40% in de winter.
Enkele oplossingen die helpen: planten groeperen creëert een microklimaat met hogere luchtvochtigheid, een bakje water in de buurt (niet eronder) van de plant voegt vocht toe aan de lucht, en af en toe sprayen geeft tijdelijke verlichting. Sometimes plants give clear signals when they need more space. 🌱 When roots start growing out of the bottom of the pot, it’s their way of saying: “time to repot me!” Giving them fresh soil and a bigger pot helps them keep growing strong and healthy.

Soms geven planten heel duidelijk aan dat ze meer ruimte nodig hebben. 🌱 Wanneer wortels onderaan de pot beginnen uit te groeien, zeggen ze eigenlijk: “het is tijd om me te verpotten!” Met verse aarde en een ruimere pot kunnen ze weer stevig en gezond verder groeien.
