Another finished object of 2025 that I never posted here: a cardigan that I made (almost) from scratch! From spinning the Rambouillet yarn with a drop spindle and dyeing it with birch leaves to knitting it. I cannot describe in words how proud I am!

The pattern is the Esther Jacket by Petite Knit.

And I also dyed some sheep fluff this week that I want to prepare for spinning soon, maybe even within tour de fleece. The yellow wool is dyed with green from my homegrown carrots and the brown wool I dyed with some walnut husks that I found in a nearby park.

Couldn't wait to start another two solar dye jars filled with white and gray sock yarn from my stash and some of the sheep wool that I originally got for mulching my garden.
Today I went for a walk through an urban forest and my garden to forage some plant material. I even found felled birch trees to get some bark from and now I am so excited for the outcome. But patience is the key!

Tadaaa, here are my first two solar dyed skeins! I couldn't be happier with the results, especially the skein on the right I am in love with. Look at the variety of soft tones!
But I also realized that I want to use madder with other colours (maybe walnut leaves?), for me it doesn't really fit in this colour scheme.
Needless to say that I am absolutely hooked now and already prepared more solar dyeing shenanigans.

Progress on the solar dyeing after 14 very sunny and hot days.
As there hasn't been so much progress anymore, I decided to open the mason jar yesterday on day 15. Stay tuned for the results! I was surprised by the outcome!

The solar dyeing after 7 days. It's been hot and sunny the past days so there was a lot of progress in the jar. Isn't it fascinating and beautiful? I can't wait to open it - maybe already next week?

Yarn pasta? Nope, my first approach to solar dyeing. I put leftovers of madder and logwood in it and added a few flowers and bark. I am so excited!

The wool has been sitting in the colouring broth the whole day. I finally took it out, rinsed it and hung it out to dry. I am pretty pleased with the colour. Most probably it will lighten a bit when dry, but it is an even and luscius yellow.

I am sieving the onion skins into an old laundry net, put the broth back in the pot and in goes the wool. To keep the wool covered I put the laundry net with the skins in top. Now it has to heat up slowly to about 70 degree Celsius and kept there for about an hour or two.

Both onion skin broth and mordanting bath with the wool have cooled down to room temperature. I will let the wool soak overnight in the mordanting solution as well as the onion skins in their broth. It has a very intense brownish colour. Tomorrow I will sieve the broth and put the wool in. I am very excited about the colour result.
