@dangillmor
This is great. Hopefully a burst to the ‘repairable’ tech movement. We, the whole world needs more of this.

Let’s end #PlannedObsolescence

@fribbledom I recently stopped using some wireless earbuds and bought some with a usb-c adapter and thought “Wait, I can keep using these until they break because there’s no battery to wear out? It’s the utopia we were promised!” Why did we put batteries in literally everything? Oh yeah, #capitalism and #plannedobsolescence Living in the future was 10 years ago.

@_elena Also lately my favorite question, how will it work on obsolete smartphones of poor people, who cannot afford to buy a new one, and the manufacturer stopped issuing security updates, so their smartphone is unsafe and a risk for hacking and identity theft?

> After Office 2019 for Mac reached end of support in October 2023, Microsoft assured customers their installed apps would "continue to function." The July 13, 2026 conversion instead drops the apps into a Microsoft-defined "reduced functionality mode," in which files can be opened and viewed but not edited or saved.

Designed to Fail: Planned Obsolescence Is Not a Bug

Software is killed not because it fails but because it was not generating enough recurring revenue.

I've had my GE fridge for two (2) years and it looks like the main control board might be faulty.

The symptom is that the light isn't consistently coming on.

It could be the switch. But it might be the board. Because lighting is not separate. The LEDs that shine into the fridge are on the bottom of the board.

It's past warranty. This is a $150 USD part.

Sometimes being poor is expensive in ways people don’t immediately see. The “boots theory” explains why cheap products, short-term survival decisions, and disposable systems can keep people stuck spending more over time.

To prevent systemd from destroying your Raspberry Pi SD card by constant 100% writing saturation of coredumps despite these being disabled, just because some Glycin HEIC thumbnailer is constantly segfaulting while you are browsing smartphone pictures, do:

Put Storage=none and ProcessSizeMax=0 into /etc/systemd/coredump.conf and do systemctl daemon-reload, delete contents of /var/lib/systemd/coredump

sudo systemctl mask systemd-coredump.socket

sudo systemctl stop systemd-coredump.socket

Yeah, we have an old #kitchenaid mixer that belonged to hubby's grandmother. It started making noise and a friend took it apart. It just needed the gears greased! @PeachMcD @AccordionBruce
