I'm all for mammalian solidarity, but there's just something about those marsupials; I don't trust 'em. Shady critters, I tell ya. And don't get me started on those monotremes.

Unlike other primates, humans are exposed to high levels of placental sex hormones in the womb, which may have shaped our evolutionary brain development

New Scientist

There are a number of panicky Facebook posts, to which I will not link, going around about the "shocking" discovery that #mRNA #vaccines cross the #placental barrier. Which really shouldn't be a surprise to anyone, but #antivaxers gonna #antivax.

Okay, the discovery is real enough. Here's a direct link: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2162253125000435 Click the "View PDF" button at the top, just above the journal title, to read the full article. Note that this is a pre-print version, meaning there may be some typos and such, but nothing that's likely to change the results.

The problem is ... well, there's no problem here! #Maternal #immunity, however acquired, is routinely passed on to #fetuses: we're all born with #immune systems primed to deal with whatever #diseases our mothers have encountered, and that's a *good thing*.

Of course antivaxers who freak out about any occurrence of the abbreviation "mRNA," like the same people often freak out about the word "pronoun" or the "cis-" and "trans-" prefixes, think this is somehow evil.

It's not. It means *fewer dead kids*. These people would literally rather kill their children than learn anything that contradicts their ideology.

Oropouche Virus (OROV) in Pregnancy: An Emerging Cause of Placental and Fetal Infection Associated with Stillbirth and Microcephaly following Vertical Transmission

Oropouche virus (OROV) is an emerging arbovirus endemic in Latin America and the Caribbean that causes Oropouche fever, a febrile illness that clinically resembles some other arboviral infections. It is currently spreading through Brazil and surrounding countries, where, from 1 January to 1 August 2024, more than 8000 cases have been identified in Bolivia, Brazil, Columbia, and Peru and for the first time in Cuba. Travelers with Oropouche fever have been identified in the United States and Europe. A significant occurrence during this epidemic has been the report of pregnant women infected with OROV who have had miscarriages and stillborn fetuses with placental, umbilical blood and fetal somatic organ samples that were RT-PCR positive for OROV and negative for other arboviruses. In addition, there have been four cases of newborn infants having microcephaly, in which the cerebrospinal fluid tested positive for IgM antibodies to OROV and negative for other arboviruses. This communication examines the biology, epidemiology, and clinical features of OROV, summarizes the 2023–2024 Oropouche virus epidemic, and describes the reported cases of vertical transmission and congenital infection, fetal death, and microcephaly in pregnant women with Oropouche fever, addresses experimental animal infections and potential placental pathology findings of OROV, and reviews other bunyavirus agents that can cause vertical transmission. Recommendations are made for pregnant women travelling to the regions affected by the epidemic.

Red Fox - Vulpes vulpes

Red fox, (Vulpes vulpes), also called common fox, species of fox (family Canidae) found throughout Europe, temperate Asia, northern Africa, and North America. It has the largest natural distribution of any land mammal except human beings. First introduced to Australia in the 19th century, it has since established itself throughout much of the continent.

Widely held as a symbol of animal cunning, the red fox is the subject of considerable folklore. In addition, red foxes are hunted for sport and for their fur and are raised commercially for pelts. (Text Source: Encyclopedia Britannica)

My passion is wildlife photography and every day I will showcase one animal in my feed. I hope I can bring the beauty of nature into your home and show how amazing nature is.
Every single animal needs our protection as they all play an important part in our survival.

Unfortunately, humans have wiped out on average 60% of mammals, birds, fish and reptiles since 1970 a recent study finds. With my wildlife photo a day, I hope to showcase a fraction of them before they are gone…

European bison - Bison bonasus

The European bison (pl: bison) (Bison bonasus) or the European wood bison, also known as the wisent, the zubr, or sometimes colloquially as the European buffalo, is a European species of bison. It is one of two extant species of bison, alongside the American bison. The European bison is the heaviest wild land animal in Europe, and individuals in the past may have been even larger than their modern-day descendants. During late antiquity and the Middle Ages, bison became extinct in much of Europe and Asia, surviving into the 20th century only in northern-central Europe and the northern Caucasus Mountains. During the early years of the 20th century, bison were hunted to extinction in the wild.

The species – now numbering several thousand and returned to the wild by captive breeding programmes – is no longer in immediate danger of extinction, but remains absent from most of its historical range. It is not to be confused with the aurochs (Bos primigenius), the extinct ancestor of domestic cattle, with which it once co-existed.

European bison were hunted to extinction in the wild in the early 20th century, with the last wild animals of the B. b. bonasus subspecies being shot in the Białowieża Forest (on today's Belarus–Poland border) in 1921. The last of the Caucasian wisent subspecies (B. b. caucasicus) was shot in the northwestern Caucasus in 1927.The Carpathian wisent (B. b. hungarorum) had been hunted to extinction by 1852.
