Die Formationen entstehen vor rund 50 Millionen Jahren wahrscheinlich durch kalkhaltige Ablagerungen, die sich um organische Kerne herum verfestigen. Auffällig bleibt die hohle Struktur vieler Säulen, die bis heute nicht vollständig erklärt ist.
