Navigating Night by Julie Leung and Angie Kang (Illustrator) (2026) is a picture book about a girl who helps her father navigate the streets as they make food deliveries from their Chinese restaurant. The story is set in the days before cellphone navigation, meaning the daughter must rely on a paper map and her own eyesight, even on stormy nights.

The Little Engine That Could by Watty Piper, George Hauman and Doris Hauman (Illustrators) (1930) is the version of the story I grew up with. It's about a Depression Era steam train packed full of food and toys for needy children breaking down just outside of town and needing rescue from another engine. Most refuse save for another, even older steam engine that is willing to try.
