Physicians know how to persevere. We are committed and hardworking. We went through many years of advanced schooling and training, which would not have been possible without perseverance. We are used to enduring physical, mental, and even spiritual hardship.

But this admirable trait can lead to trouble. Sometimes we don’t know when to quit.

This looks like a great film about subjects we don’t talk about enough: how mistakes affect doctors and the difficulties female physicians face. Looking forward to it!

Don’t let the title throw you off.

This beautiful piece is about a doctor witnessing, allowing himself to feel, and letting it show.

We need to normalize this is medicine.

When a doctor's heart falls: Witnessing raw emotion in medicine

In the midst of comforting Ginny over her grandson's illness, my heart, metaphorically worn on my sleeve, remained a steadfast source of compassion, a symbol of my commitment to patient care even amid personal and professional challenges like those posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Where are you making time for yourself this summer?

One year I didn’t take any time off over the summer months. It did not go well for me. Or anyone around me. I never did that again!

Doctors speak out against toxic work conditions

In a private physician Facebook group, I've learned a great deal about health care, both good and bad, from fellow doctors, and this message from a for-profit hospital reflects alarming issues contributing to burnout, poor patient care, and disrespect for professionals.

One of the many reasons I love travel is it always helps me put things into perspective. Something about seeing the houses get smaller and smaller after take-off and the vistas along the way flip a switch in my mind from my tiny personal problems to those of the world.

This one made me angry.

Let’s stop selectively blaming physicians for what has become a societal problem.

Medical students are by and large compassionate idealists.

Then they go through medical training, arrive at their jobs out of training, and are met with corporate indifference by employers, inadequate staff to function optimally, and often entitlement and anger by many patients.

The erosion of compassion in medicine

Organic compassion vs. organic chemistry: The future of health care demands a new paradigm for selecting and teaching students and training physicians that instills humanity in medicine.

For 2024 I’ve decided to switch to planners where the week starts on Monday rather than the Sunday setup I’ve used for years.

I’m curious to see how that changes my sense of time or organization during the week. Or if I wind up completely confused about what day it is!
