As soon as word gets out that you're #scanning photos, more photos will be discovered by various family members. You will probably end up with a LOT more than you now have. Plan paper and data storage for this.

For putting photos, #NewspaperClippings , #FamilyBibles , and other items in albums and plastic covers, use only ACID-FREE plastic and Mylar. Any yellow faded documents or previously discolored photos you might have found in albums have been damaged by poor quality plastic.

Hobby Lobby and similar stores should have safe #PhotoAlbums and acid-free album sleeve pages. You can get pages that hold multiple photos at once, or large 8x10 photos.

You can also get acid-free plastic storage at any #ComicBook store (seriously, they tend to be less expensive than specialty archiving companies). Bring in your items and ask if they have anything for that size. They probably will-- everything from baseball card size up to old Life Magazine size.

They also have "backer boards" which you can use in photo albums to hold multiple unusually sized photos in place and to scrapbook any photos. They also provide flat support for flimsy or damaged papers. NEVER GLUE OR TAPE PHOTOS! Instead, use acid-free photo corners (from Hobby Lobby etc) to attach photos to the backer boards.

Get rid of ALL cardboard boxes (even ones that seem sturdy or promise to be "archive quality") and get a GOOD thick plastic bin. (This does not have to say "acid-free.")

The lid should NOT flip or snap-on. It should be sturdy enough to store other heavy things on top without the lid bending or caving in. Over time, people will forget to treat it with care, or something will get thrown on top of the bin. Multiple heavy photo bins will tend to get stored on top of one another. You want the lid to support a LOT of weight and be as watertight as possible.

When you want the functionality of a RAID-1 but don’t want to pay for a commercially built RAID…

A pair of Sandisk 1000MBps SSDs plugged into a 10Gbps Satechi USB-C hub via flat data cables, lashed together with a zip tie, and then the whole thing formatted as a RAID using Disk Utility on your Mac.

At the time I bought them Costco was selling the SSDs for about $130 a pop and I think the hub and cables cost me about $40. Honestly it all works really, really well, and has been screamingly fast in my photographic workflow.

I saw somebody on the fediverse asking for photo software whete you could set your own defined metadata search tags but the stream moved on before I could reply so no idea what platform they were on.
Certainly Shotwell does that on Linux based desktops but not sure if they needed something more akin to lightroom. #photo #PhotoStorage #software #OpenSource #taga #tagging #metadata

I am running #PhotoPrism on a Raspberry Pi 5 with 8GB of RAM, using a 1TB SSD as the main and only drive, using the Pimoroni NVMe Base.

So far, I could not properly measure the performance, because I don’t know how to do it, but I am satisfied! Yet, this is definitely not a future-proof solution, since I need way more storage: I still haven’t imported most of my pictures there, and I need to prepare for plenty more to come.

The simplest (yet quite pricey, 261£) option would be to get a Pimoroni NVMe Duo and maximize it with a total of 4TB NVMe SSDs.

I think this is not optimal, though, and probably I could be spending all that money much better… Do you have any advice?

The thing about hosting a personal media gallery is that it requires a lot of resources when indexing the pictures (so only when you add new ones), then it’s super light—correct me if I am wrong, @photoprism. Hence, I’m thinking the best would be an extensible solution where I can add many HDDs and SSDs, without being forced to pump up the other specs too. I would probably be using just one NVMe SSD for the software and the database, and then save everything else in high-performance HDDs, since they are getting cheap and I can get much more storage with less money—of course I am performing a daily backup off-site, as they are more likely to fail, too.

If I am 100% sure that whatever I end up choosing will be solid for many years to come, I am willing to consider spending a bit more on it.
