VSCO Adds Dodge and Burn Tools into its iPhone App

VSCO has added a set of age-old yet still powerful tools to its iPhone app: dodge and burn. The addition allows users to take more granular control over shadows and highlights in their photos.

For those unfamiliar, dodging and burning refers to a two controls used to control shadows and highlights in photos. The technique dates back to developing film in the darkroom and remains one of the more popular and powerful tools for photographers to fine-tune photos. As VSCO puts it, by making dark areas brighter (dodge) and making bright areas darker (burn), photographers can control the light in their images to correct common problems and guide their viewer’s attention in the image.

VSCO has written a detailed blog post where the company describes the history of dodging and burning and how the techniques from its origin are important to using it today, even in a digital medium.

"Too much light and it comes out too dark; not enough and it’s too light. By placing paper cutouts, cones, or even their hands between the negative and the print, and planning out the exposure times of each part, darkroom printers could mask out areas of the image so that some parts of the print were exposed more or less than others to create a pleasing final image," VSCO writes.

VSCO's dodge and burn tool works similarly to the film technique and the tools that exist in dedicated editing programs like Adobe Photoshop: the tool provides a brush size to allow users to exercise considerable control over how much of the image is affected by a dodge or burn. It can now be found in the toolbar next to Blur, Text, Adjust, and Exposure tools.

While dodging and burning are not revolutionary techniques, their inclusion in mobile applications is less common than editing tools that affect the whole image. This kind of granular control over a specific portion of the image is somewhat rare, making VSCO's offering of what sounds like a simple addition, notable.

Dodge and Burn along with a set of 100 film photo effects the company added in October are available to all iOS VSCO members, a subscription that costs $20 per year. The company has provided no details on when the feature is expected to come to Android devices, unfortunately.

Picsart Adds One-Touch Background Removal Tool to iOS and Android

Picsart has announced a new powerful editing tool for its iOS and Android apps: fast, one-touch background removal. The company says the feature makes editing images faster and easier and is available for Picsart Gold subscribers.

The background removal tool is first launching on iOS and Android devices today with support for the web-based editor to come at a later date. Picsart says that it added the feature because the term “background remover” receives more than 20 million Google searches per month, which clearly highlights the feature is in high demand.

Picsart says that it has continuously trained the artificial intelligence (AI) that drives its software to understand images and video at scale to allow its user base to edit photos for professional purposes. The company says this latest update is a dramatic improvement to that AI that can remove backgrounds with what it says is among the best in the market.

"As many of our creators have begun using Picsart for professional use cases -- like creating their own online shops or podcast covers -- we’ve improved our AI significantly in order to meet the demand for more professional tools," Picsart says. "In fact, we even launched Picsart AI Research (PAIR), a research and development team dedicated to building the most advanced tools for creative communication, to work on taking our tech to the next level. These tools are some of the first to come from PAIR."

The background removal tool works in basically one step. After uploading an image, a single tap on the "Remove BG" button will automatically pull the main subject of the image and cut it out, making it easy to add a new background behind the subject or object.

The launch of the background removal tool follows Picsart's recent $130 million Series C funding, part of which it says will be used to expand PAIR. The company's post-money valuation is now roughly $1.5 billion. The team says it plans to hire more talented staff, continue its AI research, and build new products and features that it hopes will empower the creativity of the hundreds of millions of Picsart users.

The app -- which mainly uses a freemium model but a more robust paid option -- has proven to be wildly popular. Revenue has topped more than $100 million as of August of 2021 and the app hosts more than 150 million users per month, most of whom are under the age of 35. Picsart's main appeal is how easy it is to use, and the addition of the simple one-touch background removal tool builds on this expectation.

The background removal tool is available starting today and is included with Picsart Gold, which costs $4.66 a month.

Cyberlink Launches PhotoDirector 13, Super-Charges its AI-Powered Tools

Cyberlink has announced PhotoDirector 13, which promises improved AI-editing tools, integration of Getty and Shutterstock libraries, and adds new lighting effects and color adjustment features.

Founded in Taiwan, Cyberlink has developed and owns over 200 patented technologies across multimedia software and AI facial recognition.

The Director 365 editing suite is one of the company's products and consists of four apps -- PowerDirector for AI-powered video editing, ColorDirector for color grading, AudioDirector for editing audio files, and PhotoDirector for image post-processing -- all of which have been updated today.

PhotoDirector 13 -- the latest version of the photo editing software -- is a multi-layer editor that blends image post-processing with graphics and animation.

It has a complete set of image adjustment tools such as white balance, tone, HSL, color wheels, and more. It also offers users a choice of mask tools, photo effects, LUTs, layer templates, Sky Replacement, brushes, light rays, and other creative tools.

The software previously utilized AI-powered tools for editing, and the latest version of PhotoDirector has made UI enhancements and added new light effects and color adjustment features.

The update also brings improved AI-powered Sky Replacement and Photo Animation effects and introduces new Dispersion, Glitch Art, and Object Segmentation tools. Edited images can also be turned into a music video by adding bounces and shakes with the Audio Beat effect.

The ease of use is of great importance for the company and as such, the editor has Guided tools. These can be applied in a few clicks and can appeal to beginners as well as business owners who want to create effective marketing visuals without having to perform complex tasks.

PhotoDirector 13 is available to both Windows and macOS users. A subscription-based model -- titled PhotoDirector 365 on Cyberlink's pricing guide -- can be paid monthly or annually. At the time of publication, the annual plan subscription costs $41 with an introductory 25% off offer and is originally priced at $55.

This subscription also includes 50GB of cloud storage and other perks, like access to royalty-free use of Getty and Shutterstock libraries, plugins, and other assets which the company says are regularly added.

The lifetime license, titled PhotoDirector 13 Ultra, costs $100 and includes 25GB of cloud storage for one year but doesn't include unlimited access to premium plugins, effects, stock imagery, and other assets.

The software can also be tested on a 30-day trial basos. System requirements, features, and pricing options including bundles can be found on Cyberlink's website. A mobile version of the software can be downloaded on Google Play Store for Android and on the Apple App Store for iOS.
