Construction of an artificial phosphoketolase pathway that efficiently catabolizes multiple carbon sources to acetyl-CoA
The canonical glycolysis pathway converts glucose into two molecules of acetyl-CoA via a cascade of eleven biochemical reactions. This study repurposes phosphoketolase to construct an artificial pathway which comprises only three reactions and could theoretically achieve a 100% carbon yield of acetyl-CoA from any sugar.
