This talk looks at how the language of âresponsible,â âtrustworthy,â and even âcreativeâ AI is often used to soften and legitimize extractive infrastructures. Iâll discuss how narratives of creativity and ethics are mobilized to make technological systems appear open, empowering, and human-centred, all while keeping the same corporate logics intact. Stemming from my perspective as an artist and researcher, Iâll share examples from creative AI and academia, and consider how we might reclaim creativity from the narratives that instrumentalise it.
Bio: BĆaĆŒej Kotowski is a researcher and artist whose work explores how emerging technologies shape modes of creation, perception, and relation. He is pursuing a PhD at the Music Technology Group, where he examines how AI architectures mediate creative processes and enable new forms of sonic expression. Through speculative and practice-based approaches, he develops sound works, installations, and generative systems that engage with the material and affective dimensions of computation. His work has been presented at festivals and venues including Ars Electronica, the Seoul Mediacity Biennale, AMRO, and +RAIN.

About AI Café series
The AI CafĂ© is part of the cooperation project âCritical digitization for art and culture / Theater Phoenix x servus.atâ, in which database-supported, automated, and algorithmic processes in theater operations are being explored. The project combines a critical examination of AI systems with their actual application in daily workflows. Part of the project, âKI CafĂ©â â a public event series in which different experiences and approaches to AI in cultural production are collected and discussed.

(Der Vortrag wird auf Englisch gehalten.)
In diesem Vortrag geht es darum, wie die Begriffe âverantwortungsbewussteâ, âvertrauenswĂŒrdigeâ und sogar âkreativeâ KI oft verwendet werden, um ausbeuterische Infrastrukturen zu beschönigen und zu legitimieren. Ich werde erörtern, wie Narrative von KreativitĂ€t und Ethik herangezogen werden, um technologische Systeme offen, befĂ€higend und menschenzentriert erscheinen zu lassen, wĂ€hrend die zugrunde liegende Unternehmenslogik unverĂ€ndert bleibt. Aus meiner Perspektive als KĂŒnstler und Forscher werde ich Beispiele aus dem Bereich der kreativen KI und der Wissenschaft vorstellen und durch diese beleuchten, wie wir KreativitĂ€t aus den Narrativen zurĂŒckgewinnen können, die sie instrumentalisieren.
Biografie:
BĆaĆŒej Kotowski ist Forscher und KĂŒnstler. In seiner Arbeit befasst er sich damit, wie neue Technologien die Arten des Schaffens, der Wahrnehmung und der Beziehung prĂ€gen. Er promoviert an der Music Technology Group, wo er untersucht, wie KI-Architekturen kreative Prozesse vermitteln und neue Formen des klanglichen Ausdrucks ermöglichen. Mittels spekulativer und praxisorientierter AnsĂ€tze entwickelt er Klangwerke, Installationen und generative Systeme, die sich mit den materiellen und affektiven Dimensionen der Computation auseinandersetzen. Seine Arbeiten wurden auf Festivals und an Veranstaltungsorten wie Ars Electronica, der Seoul Mediacity Biennale, AMRO und +RAIN prĂ€sentiert.

Das Projekt verbindet eine kritische Auseinandersetzung mit KI-Systemen mit deren tatsĂ€chlicher Anwendung in tĂ€glichen ArbeitsablĂ€ufen. Teil des Projekts ist das âKI CafĂ©â â eine öffentliche Veranstaltungsreihe, in der unterschiedliche Erfahrungen und AnsĂ€tze zu KI in der Kulturproduktion gesammelt und diskutiert werden.
