The flags had been a staple of the #California coffee chain since its origins in San Francisco’s Mission district. I remember their bold presence from my first visit in 2014, when I lived a short bike ride away.

Here is the email I received from them today after closing my account and submitting a complaint to customer service:

After listening to our Team Members and having meaningful conversations with San Francisco Pride Board Directors, we understand that Pride flags are an important symbol of safety and belonging to many of our communities and stores. We’ve learned a great deal, and as a result, every Pride flag that is up stays up, and any Pride flag that was previously removed can be put back up.

Oh shit! Likely premature but RIP Philz Coffee… Capitalism screwing the employees and likely ultimately ruining the brand sucks. Philz is what originally got me into pour over coffee. 😢
I’m also not entirely shocked after watching them expand to 40 stores from only 14 Bay Area locations since I moved to the area in 2013 (it didn’t seem sustainable even to me).
