Ended Monday and welcomed Tuesday after a walk under azure skies with Three Strange Angels by Peter Garland, released in 2008 on Tzadik,

Review by Anthony Tognazzini

Released on John Zorn’s Tzadik label, THREE STRANGE ANGELS is actually a reissue of recordings made by avant-garde composer Peter Garland near the beginning of his career. The spare, lyrical compositions reflect Garland’s interest in traditional Native American and Mexican music, as well as the minimalist strain of American experimental music. With an ensemble that includes violin, harp, recorder, and percussion, Garland and company create delicate sonic tapestries that are as lovely as they are otherworldly.

Ended the weekend and welcomed the start of the week after my swim with Peter Garland: Love Songs released in 2005 on Tzadik

Review by Blair Sanderson

Peter Garland's soft-edged, quasi-minimalist music is sometimes described as "romantic," because his open lyricism, simple modes, and pretty timbres play on emotions and summon sentimental responses from some listeners....Percussionist William Winant, violinists David Abel, Carla Kihlstedt, Roy Malan, and Timb Harris, and pianists Julie Steinberg and Heather Heise are mellow and quite subdued in these performances, which is all the music requires. Tzadik's sound is surprisingly loud for such laid-back performances, so watch the volume.

Ended the lovely weekend and greeted the blue skies of Monday after my swim with Another Sunrise from 2002 by Peter Garland who is a composer, writer and publisher of Soundings Press.

A student of James Tenney and Harold Budd, much of Garland's work could be considered post-minimal although many of his postminimal works such as "The Days Run Away" (1971) were written in the early 1970s at the same time as the first minimalist works. He is also an expert on Native American music, and on the music of Silvestre Revueltas. He is the author of Gone Walkabout: Essays 1991-. Garland started his Soundings Press series in 1971 after attending a publishing workshop with Dick Higgins at CalArts.

New #review today: "A world traveler and musicologist, #PeterGarland’s compositions are at once steeped in #PostMinimalism and informed by his travels and other interests, and from those that I have heard thus far, can go just about anywhere within a #ModernClassical context." #ExposeOnline http://expose.org/index.php/articles/display/peter-garland-the-basketweave-elegies-3.html
