How to improvise on an existing work of improvisation? American outfit Pillow took the plunge by carefully placing European free jazz legend Peter Brötzmann’s group improvisation piece Images on the rack. Don’t expect any tortured notes or twisted chords, though, as Pillow respectfully and patiently square up to Brötzmann’s music. Written especially for his Tentet and released on Okkadisk, Images is one of Brötzmann’s most meditative collective works of improvisation. Tentet member and cellist Fred Lonberg Holm took up the challenge and together with his Pillow quartet breathed new live into the composition, and a completely new piece of music is born. Tetterettet by ICP Tentet, released on Instant Composers Pool in 1977.

Recorded in 1977, the Instant Composers Pool’s Tetterettet is the first classic of the band’s larger incarnations. Assembled out of elements recorded live in Uithoorn, Utrecht, and the band’s home base of Amsterdam, with Misha Mengelberg using a cut-and-paste collage method akin to Teo Macero’swork with Miles Davis, the record features an all star lineup that added three leading lights of free music: bassist Alan Silva and saxophonists John Tchicai and Peter Brötzmann. In this period, Brötzmann made the long train trip from Wuppertal, Germany, to A’dam on a weekly basis to rehearse with ICP, bassist Silva coming in from Paris...

One of the earthiest records we've heard from Peter Brotzmann in years -- a record that features his own work on reeds with the Turkish combo Konstrukt -- whose enigmatic blend of percussion, guitar, piano, and electric instruments really creates this amazing mood! The live set was recorded with a nice degree of echo -- allowing the sounds to fold back on themselves in a really great way, especially the percussion -- while more powerful moments are maybe a bit more stark in the mix -- such as Brotzmann's bold tenor solos, or the guitar lines -- as the music moves from far-out, freewheeling jam -- to much more organic, personal moments. - Dusty Groove
