The Skeleton Flower (Diphylleia grayi) 💦❄️🍀 This flower when it blooms and conditions of prolonged rain and high humidity are met, its petals become translucent like glasswork. It is native to northern and central Japan. Photography by aki_goodspeed [IG] #flowers #nature #chrystal #petals

Temporary Taste

Morning light spills
like weak lemonade
across the hardwood floor,
the air just warm enough
to tempt blossoms and buds
into revealing their secrets

but the robins know
and I know
that this sugared taste of spring
will turn bitter in the mouth,
and we’ll be forced to spit out
one last winter snow

Tinder Land

I’m not much of a tourist
not in the traditional sense—

my eyes absorb contrasts & colors
two sponges soaking up skin
and limbs and moving mouths

my focus on rounded hips shaped
to carry babies, baskets of fruit—
calloused hands that knead dough
into pigeon-plump loaves of bread

lines of laundry strung like beads
above cobblestoned alleyways

men with tree-trunk biceps
hosing down the stench of fish
at the close of market day—

more than take-home trinkets
more than spires and promenades—
this tinder keeps a culture burning.

Detachment

I curl in on myself—
a single petal
gone dry in the sun

it’s too late for rain
there is no redemption
without attachments

the stem shook me loose
—the roots never knew
I was there

~~

The Wind’s Secrets

I don’t know
where the wind blows
or where it goes
or how it knows
to change directions

but if I were
a bloom on a stem
maybe then
I could bend,
ask the wind questions

perhaps
I could try
to grow wings and fly
backlit by a sky
blue with wind’s secrets

but as I stand
feet on the land
I hold in my hand
only the thinnest hint
of a whisper

The Undoing of Blooms

you look like January
cold bleak overcast,
turned out in shades of gray

so it’s hard to take you seriously
with the garish display
of prismatic wildflowers

i should be used to this by now
these petaled apologies
doomed to die within days

they are meant to soothe,
cajole, to cast shadow
over brittle, careless words

but even daisies and dahlias
bluebells and baby’s breath
cannot kindle a fire gone cold

i will go through the motions
pour water into the vase
until petals wither and fall

perhaps there is still beauty
in death and despondency
if only i could learn how to cry
