Well it seems that Panda Express has changed their policy. They kept my pennies again today (side dish) and I asked to speak to the manager, hoping to make my point that they're keeping two cents when she scolded me for keeping one.
But it was a different manager, who said they'd give me a nickel back, shortchanging themselves three cents!
I thanked her profusely and said what a nice change in policy this is. Not expecting it to be consistent, but we'll see.

There are 114 BILLION pennies still in circulation. Two stores in midtown are already rounding. At least Big Apple is using "symmetrical rounding" or "Canadian based rounding" which sometimes benefits the drawer, sometimes the customer.
This will be illegal March 20, 2026 when a NY state law goes into effect, prohibiting those paying cash from paying a penalty.

The End of an Era: Why the Penny Is Retiring in 2026

They should still be minting #pennies because a MEMO from the pedophile in the Oval Office has no power to change our currency

Have you all run into retailers who no longer use pennies? If so, how do they round, and is it handled by the cash register or does the cashier have to do it on the fly?

I thought that they obviously would round to the nearest 5 and program the cash register to do it, but I've run into two retailers who round irregularly and seem to be rounding up.

It may depend on whether they have pennies that day. Apparently there's been penny shortage even before the mint decided to stop making them. And there is no clear guidance from the government, though GA has issued a document.

A penny for your thoughts: now is the time to search among your loose change for #Pennies. Banks have been asking for them as production has been discontinued. I went to a local branch with a set of rolls and they were thrilled to get some. They said their business clients have been begging for them plus they think people might be hoarding.

So take some time to unload your pennies!
