Rote und Grüne Ampelmann - images: Time Roeloffs
The Ampelmann is a beloved symbol of the former GDR. The Ampelmann was created by traffic psychologist Karl Peglau and introduced in Berlin in October 1961. The figure achieved such popularity that in the early 1980s the Ampelmann became part of road safety education for children.
After the unification of East and West Germany, the East German ampelmann disappeared because the same traffic lights should be used throughout the country. After several campaigns to preserve the East German Ampelmann, it was reinstated. Today, pedestrian traffic lights with East German Ampelmänner can again be found everywhere in the streetscape of Berlin and other East German cities.
From newspapers and magazines, Tim Roeloffs cuts and slices pictures and glues them together into a collage, in which a new, fantastic world emerges. After working as a tennis instructor, Tim Roeloffs settled in Berlin in 1992 and joined the artists' initiative Tacheles. After art and culture house Tacheles closed in 2012, Tim has worked in various workshops in Berlin and his work is available at various galleries. Currently, Tim creates his work in a workshop/shop in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg.
