When we left our campsite by the banks of the Río Atuel in the morning, we were completely alone in the canyon. The Argentinians don’t seem to be morning people, and we were fine with that; we enjoyed the solitude. We were making very slow progress because we constantly had to turn our heads to take in all the fantastic landscapes and amusing rock formations. We even had to be careful not to fall into the partially well-filled, partially almost empty riverbed. It was so beautiful that we kept reminding ourselves how glad we were that we had chosen this path, even though we didn’t know what the road conditions would be like. The Río Atuel is dammed a total of four times throughout the entire valley (a straight-line distance of 26 km, but for us, it was 46 km with an elevation gain of 980 m), and we passed three hydroelectric power plants.
Finally, in the afternoon, we conquered the last section, steep uphill, faced almost unridable surfaces for the last couple of kilometers, and reached the village of Nihuil.
