This is the former freight depot in Brussels. It was constructed in 1902 and recently renovated. Twelve wooden pavilions were integrated into the building and today the complex is used as a commercial, office and exhibition space. The pavilions are based on a modular system and can be adapted or fully removed without damaging the historic hall.
The entire complex is now energy-neutral. This is achieved through new roof insulation, a large solar array and geothermal heating. Furthermore the wooden structures and the indoor greenery create a really comforting and generous atmosphere. Especially the trees nicely separate the busier main corridor with markets and exhibitions from the quieter side corridors with the offices.
This project is a great example of how we can combine modern applications with historic industrial structures and a good model for other conversion projects.
