When we're feeling particularly blank and unable to function (partly this is because we're physically ill, slightly but just enough to prey on our mind) we sometimes resort to putting a movie on that we know will hit hard at some psychic wound of ours. We've done this for a while, and regard it semi-jokingly as "Self-Harm Theatre".

John Patrick Shanley's Doubt, for example, is a reminder both of our questionable decision to seek Catholic conversion in the 2000s, and our SA experiences (which weren't at the hands of the Catholic Church). Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island, which we recently ran, is a sharp reminder of how we feel insecure about our perception of reality thanks to serious mental illness. There's a modest list of films we've used for Self-Harm Theatre, but the difficulty is that in order to add something new to the list we…have to take a chance on watching a movie that could be exceedingly painful to watch when unsoftened by even a hint of familiarity. The last such movie we took a chance on was Paul Schrader's First Reformed. Ethan Hawke gives an all-time performance as a guilt-ridden priest struggling against the conservatism of his church.

There's movies we've been saving up for Self-Harm Theatre that we've been too cowardly to touch so far. Like the French film from the 1990s, Ma Vie en Rose, about a family coming to grips with the realization that their 'son' is actually a trans girl. There's other Paul Schrader movies we haven't run yet. There's horror films…
