Red Balloon (German: Roter Ballon) by Paul Klee (1922)
Artist: Paul Klee
Year: 1922
Medium: Oil (and oil transfer drawing?) on chalk-primed gauze, mounted on board
Paul Klee’s “Red Balloon” (1922) stands as a profound example of the artist’s ability to blend abstraction with whimsy, transforming simple geometric shapes into a scene that is both playful and deeply symbolic. This work, part of Klee’s Bauhaus period, showcases his mastery of color theory, form, and composition, making him one of the most innovative artists of the early 20th century. “Red Balloon” draws the viewer into a seemingly abstract world, yet evokes a recognizable sense of space, depth, and narrative. Through his use of minimal forms and a bold palette, Klee creates a work that is rich in imagination and layered with meaning.
“Ci sono io e fioriscono i fiori,
pienezza è intorno a me perché io esisto.
Il canto dell’usignolo
m’incanta l’udito e il cuore.
Sono il padre di tutto,
di tutti sulle stelle
e nello spazio infinito.
Me ne sono andato
ed è calata la sera
e stracci di nubi
avvolgono la luce.
Me ne sono andato
e il Nulla è calato come un’ombra
su tutto.
Oh spina
dell’argenteo turgido frutto.”

Highways and Byways, Paul Klee, 1929
I like the loose structure, the faded color, and all the strange random texture over it all. Maybe like hang gliding over the idea of land in a fuzz storm. haha. but I guess for me there's a feeling in all of PK's work, like a loose but interesting intelligence. Everything is weird but it doesn't hurt. ❤️

My latest #blog post: Memory and Inspiration
On the anniversary of my father's passing, I'm reminded of how he used this #PaulKlee painting to teach me about how our brains create story. #creativity #art
