It was one of the earliest cooperative societies in the UK, and it was created thirteen years before the one in Rochdale which is generally viewed as the country's first successful cooperative society. Thomson went on to form thirty further cooperative societies across Scotland and was a key player in the early socialist movement.

This society was founded in 1831 by William Thomson and other local weavers to provide support and assistance to local families, and in particular to provide them with food and other provisions as cost price.

The former Glasgow Corporation Public Baths and Wash House on Tollcross Road in the Parkhead area of Glasgow. Designed by A.B. MacDonald, it was built in 1904.
At that time, it had a pub on the corner of the ground floor with a shop next to it and flats above. The shop was occupied by a branch of the Clydesdale Bank, and in 1923, they took over the whole ground floor. This makes a change from the current trend for converting former banks into pubs!
