This week's freely available Devash magazine (for kids AND adults) is on #parashat Behukotai ~ the last reading from the book of Vayikra. You can find it online here: https://mechonhadar.s3.amazonaws.com/mh_torah_source_sheets/HCFDevashBeHukkotai5784.pdf A difficult-to-understand #parasha for many (including me) that Devash makes lovely to think about...

Whose Truth

Sometimes women with voices are shut out of the camp. But that’s not the end of the story.

Rabbi Danya Ruttenberg
Apr 8, 2024

"...Right, so only Miriam gets tzaraat...

And only she is punished.

Only she is maligned.

Only she is sent away.

The thing is this: The text never says that the Kushite wife thing that caused Miriam and Aaron to "speak against" Moses about wasn't true.

...Most of the women murdered as witches were, in some way, woman who didn't have the protection of a man with power...or those who were racial or religious others (Quakers in a Puritan community, eg).

...All of these things were part of the larger system of which the discrediting of female healers was a part.

We must always be attuned to questions like:

What narrative are we trying to advance, and whose interests does this serve?

Whose voices might be suppressed in the process?

This week's #Parasha is Bo. The poem for my upcoming Wheel of the Year Journal illustration is my parasha, & reflects many of the difficulties I've had in my life. It's a bit sad.

The journal will have blank pages for taking notes, sketches, or just musing about what the Torah or Haftarah readings for each Parashat and Yom Tovim mean to you personally.

What are your thoughts on this week's #Torah portion, #Parashat #Shemot 5783? What are some questions you've had about it? Any insights to share? Exodus 1:1-6:1. Great quick overview of it here -

Sh'mot

These are the names of the sons of Israel who came to Egypt with Jacob, each coming with his household: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah; Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin; Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher. - Exodus 1:1-4

@gilad73 In the past (on my other account that I’m no longer using) I’ve used #parashat like that.

But fro now on I’ll use #parsha - it’s more versatile!

@regordane Ah, this really helps actually! Previously I’ve used #parashat and then the title but it probably makes sense to stick with #parsha - that way it won’t matter where in the (English) sentence it sits.

@sheepchase

I reckon it ought to be #parsha because #parashat, literally "the parsha of", only makes sense when immediately followed by the title of the week's portion.

But the relative popularity of competing hashtags remains a mystery unplumbed by science or logic.

So is the appropriate hashtag for talking about this week’s #Torah portion #parashat or #parsha? I never know.

#mazeldon

Finished this week’s #Torah portion (#parashat #Miketz).

It has a sheepy bit:

“For all shepherds are abhorrent to Egyptians.”

Rashi says this is because sheep were deities to the Egyptians.
It also handily works out that the Israelites get choice grazing land.
