Just catching up with Bernard Hickey's Dec 6 episode on the iwi building papa kāinga housing on a Motueka marae;

(The Spinoff's podcast pages seem custom designed to make it impossible to link to specific episodes 🤷‍♂️)

This episode includes multiple examples of what iwi can do for their people, when they get their land back, and the funding they need to make use of it.

So I'm back on my home ground. I've come back to Te Tairawhiti for a tangi. My heart goes out to my birth mother. Her wedding weekend has turned into the funeral of her future husband, who became very unwell quickly due to his health. He was an elderly man. And he had lived a long life filled with love and music. When we got to the marae all she said was 'it's good to have you home baby.' I've been away for 5 years...#home #papakainga #tangi

I think tiny homes are still a viable option in situations where a community can work together on a build-your-own strategy, a la Habitat for Humanity. You need a building space with the necessary tools, at least one person with relevant building skills who's willing to run workshops and oversee builds. Bulk buying of materials and maybe financing for that helps too. Maybe also places for papa kāinga of tiny homes when they're finished.
