Generative AI fuel human creativity, commerce, and everyday chores—but they also power technologies that satisfy our fundamental need to connect. AI companions (LLM-driven social machines with memory and customizability) are challenging ideas about what counts as real intimacy. In this session, scholars from the U.S., Germany, and Canada will explore the scientific record and philosophical debates surrounding these AI: How we see “someone” in the machine, how shallow and deep connections evolve, and the possibilities and perils of their use and commercialization.
Diabetes is a leading cause of preventable death in the United States, and shows no signs of slowing. A recent study estimates that the number of people worldwide with diabetes will more than double in the next three decades, reaching 1.3 billion by 2050. Ensuring access to more affordable medications, improved technologies, and inclusive, whole-person care is critical for managing, and even preventing, this disease. In this panel, hear how Amazon Pharmacy, One Medical and Insulet are re-envisioning care—from the clinic to the home–to support patients throughout their care journey.

What if every human had a fundamental right to have their own AI... for the express purpose of interfacing with other AI? A decade ago, my blog post "ESTEEM is STEM plus Ethics plus Empathy" considered disruptive technologies such as AI and the need for expanding STEM to include Ethics and Empathy. Then in 2016, the blog post "Have your AI call my AI" was provoked by hyperbolic claims of AI taking over everything. Now, as we enter 2024, societal considerations for AI have shifted from hyperbole to practical impacts and the need for increased caution as well as public private governance.
